| MINI2 Master | Anyone dumb enough to click on a flashing web ad that claims you have a virus or need protection deserves to get infected. ![]() "The number of discovered Mac vulnerabilities has soared in recent years, with 81 found last year, up from 46 in 2004 and 27 in 2003" ...as compared to the tens of thousands of known, documented, vulnerabilities in windows. Speaking of which, how's Vista coming along? Is it going to meet its release date of 2004? |

Offline | The sky is falling..! The sky is falling...! Two Mac owners hit by viruses since 2001..! That's it. I'm junking this crappy system and going to something more secure like.... um... well... yes, nevermind. Seriously, is that report meant to read like sarcasm..?? That guy should hand back his engineering degree for being too stupid to be allowed out on his own. I bet he responds to all those emails telling him that he's going to inherit millions of dollars from Nigeria too.I can't even look at pictures in email with Windows because it's a security risk and Microsoft's method of fixing the problem is to just not open emailed pictures. Fair enough... After all who'd ever want to make a digital copy of a photograph and EMAIL it to someone else..? |

| heterochromic & loving it | Then just use a different mail reader (or complain to your network administrator), whiz kid! There are plenty of them... Besides, stripping out JPGs is generally a server option chosen by the network administrator, not a Microsoft/email reader issue. I'd like to blame MS for every problem in the world but I know plenty of people running Outlook etc. who have no problem pulling in emailed images...-Ricardo 06 MCS-W/77 MGB/69 MGB-GT ![]() "2 minutes by yourself and...you feel shame, you know...and then you get free" Last edited by MGB Boy : May 2nd, 2006 at 06:04 PM. |

Offline | I work for a startup now, remember... There's only 8 of us so we don't have a network admin. The closest we get is our CFO and when he's stumpted he calls his brother in law! ![]() I can download pictures, it just doesn't do it automatically. I have to right click in the banner of an email to get them. That doesn't really solve the problem does it, because it's not doing any scanning when it does bring them in - it's just shifting the responsibility to me for actively going through a warning banner before downloading them... |

Offline | [vent] Well, I thought that one of the spin offs of having Windows on this Macbook would be that I could finally use the Tivo To Go feature and make DVDs of shows I wanted to keep... What I wasn't counting on was what a POS Sonic's MyDVD is..! I've used Roxio Toast on the Mac in the past and it seems pretty good, but I haven't had to deal with them much since the Sonic / Roxio merger. I bought the photo and video suite which included MyDVD because it was the cheapest thing that had the Tivo logo on the box. Well, first of all it asked me for a playback password. That was a security thing in early versions of the Tivo desktop (aparently) but I've only ever had Tivo desktop 2.2 and MyDVD 8 on here... The Sonic 'Ask Sonia' help system has almost no help for Tivo To Go and mainly directs you to the Tivo web site who only help with the Tivo side of TTG transfers... Eventually I found a fix for the password problem in the Tivo forums but it's a bug in the MyDVD software. I tried to download a patch for MyDVD but the installer refused to run as it seems that the suite is different to the stand alone product. When I could finally get the recording into the MyDVD editor it runs so slowly that it's almost impossible to use... When I hit 'preview' it just locked up and I had to reboot. From what I've read in forum searches, MyDVD 8 is worse than the previous version, but it's too late to know that now and there's no way to downgrade with patches from their website. If this was the way I had to edit DV footage and make DVDs, I would still never have made one. ![]() [/vent] |

Offline | I am the reluctatnt admin of our 6 macs at work. They were all but the server running 0s9 til this morning. Then the hardware key to Quark blew it. And we were left high and dry. A publication without publishing software. I have to go back in tonight to get at least one up and running on OSX for the new software tomorrow. It was going to happen one day, but it's 0s9 to osX overnight. yick. Did i mention we have a weekly deadline? ![]() NY/NE Mod |

Offline | Not Macs but PCs ... we've stopped paying the $2500 "annual maintenance" for our PCB programs for a couple of years now, because they stopped supporting anything earlier than XP ![]() Fine for us - we save money, and we haven't needed their gadgety upgrades yet ![]() |

| kgouin | Where do you work? I was in the printing/publishing business for 17 years and just left it 9 months ago. OSX isn't too bad once you get used to it. The biggest problem is the fonts and it seemed like Universe was the biggest problem. It would be fine on one mac but not the next one. Sometimes it would work and sometimes not. I actually like OSX better except for not being able to tell printer fonts from screen fonts by looking at them on the screen. |

Offline | I've been on X at home for a couple of years. The OS mind you. And I've grown quite used to it as home operating system with occassional graphic projects. Now getting OSX v.04, and 3 to cooperate has gotten my boss picking up family packs of Tigahs at the Danbury Store - The very ones I faxed to him tonight after trying to install a type manager on a 10.04 machine. Wonderful how each machine accepts only it's own discs. Yik. Our server lives on panther. Phase 1 accomplished. 1 system fully operational in OSX whatever-cat. PDFing to printer specs, printing, and and scanning. I'm sure i forgot something. Good night! ![]() NY/NE Mod |

| heterochromic & loving it | Avoid Sonic/Roxio like the plague, the merger had not done good things to the products they make. I've been a diehard Easy CD Creator (and then Easy Media Creator) user since version 1 came out from Adaptec many many moons ago. Always worked great, never had any issues. Fallen a bit behind on my upgrades, recently bumped up from V6 to V8, my first post-Sonic version. Crap crap crap. Clunky crash-prone interface, slow, memory hog, and most painfully it has induced an random error where DVD-R media (including DVD-R media the program itself just recorded) is unreadable in the drive unless you eject and re-insert a half dozen times. Works fine in any other system (or, in the case of media recorded as DVD video, in any stand-alone player I've tried). I've been going round and around with Sonic tech support for about 6 weeks now... -Ricardo |

| heterochromic & loving it | Thunderbird. Doesn't block normal attached images at all, and in the case of an html formatted note it will ask you if you want to let it load remote images (you can default that to "yes"). And it isn't anything like the trojan-hole that Outlook is... -Ricardo PS My buddy Rob (and ex Microsoft employee, ironically) works for a software firm whose network admin has set up the server to block all jpgs, strips them right out of any email, no "click here to get the images" option. To send him an image, I have to rename it to a .txt extension to get it past the servers, then he renames them to .jpg to view them. Silly. |

Offline | Oh great... now you tell me... Well actually you should tell Tivo because Sonic is the only officially supported DVD burning option for Tivo To Go. ![]() Sounds like this is it now then. Now way I can take back the software now and every support page on Sonic's site says how they're stopping support for (seeminly) all their old versions and how everyone should upgrade to V8 to get support. Not that their support it worth anything, but you have to register the product to an email address before you can even look for patches. Horrible company. |

Offline | After reading your later post, it seems that you have it all under control. But there is one thing that you should check out to make sure the font thing is set up correctly if you haven't already. Apple has a white paper on their website called "Using and Managing Fonts in Mac OS X". When we were moving to OSX 2 years ago at work, I ended up having to get the font thing straightened out for the company because our tech department muffed it up but good. Anyway, I followed that white paper step by step and it helped get rid of all the font conflicts that were happening as a result of the initial setup. BTW, we are on Panther and use Suitcase as our font manager (Font Book that comes with OSX is junk) and Quark 6.5. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions...I have copious notes from the project. Fun times. ![]() |

Offline | Is it just an illusion, or are there more Mac users in the MINI population than in the general population? I'm sure it's been mentioned before... I keep thinking that I'll post a list of brands that I use and see how many are common across the MINI community. |
