| I agree - excess should just get squeezed out and it shouldn't matter how much is slopped around in there as long as there are no voids. The guy who spread out a miniscule amount was more at risk of getting voids I'd have thought... Having said that the Apple amount does seem excessive! Mine runs pretty hot (~60C) cpu temp but that's part of the 1 inch thin design. They make the case from aluminum so that it acts as a heat sink... There's even a temp sensor stuck to the lower case, so you know they designed it like that or else why check the temp there. I'd still rather have a warm metal shell than a bigger thicker plastic one with a metal heat sink hidden inside. ![]() Religion is like a huge dog. | Anyone else experiencing issues with their site5 servers today? After experienceing database issues, then unresponsiveness, and a reboot yesterday, and customer service taking 5 hours to respond, it appears at the moment it's hapenning all over again. The forums are no help any more now that they ban any "customer service issues" from being discussed (I'sn't that what the forums are for in the first place??). I think I'll be emailing management soon. |

| My Site5 / GBMINI.net was down for a while this morning; much worse was ?Monday? when it was down/up/down all day - down I think for >4 hours in total ![]() It's the way. I choose new always-rated-excellent hosting, and it goes bad |

| Just like me washing my car.. ![]() They have been nothing but spectacular as far as the hosting is concerned, until this week. Not once since I signed up in september had I noticed the server down or slow. Frankly I hope it happens one more time today, so I can really go off on them and demand compensation. Don't forget they have a 99.9% uptime guarantee. |

| Just finished reading through the MacBook service manual. I am impress. Unlike the ibook that is held togeather with foil and tape and a pain to work on, the macbook uses those things previously reserved for only high end powerbooks: screws. Yet, unlike powerbooks which require dozens of different sized screws to replace the hard drive (my most common task), the macbooks hard drive and memory are user-replaceable and slide out inside the battery slot. Brilliant. I just think it is hilarious that they are charging $150 extra for the black plastic. Yet, everyone I've asked doesn't care and still wants the black one. |

| iPod ... finally bought one ... The UI takes me a bit of getting used to - I'm expecting to click "right" (>>|) to enter a menu, but you have to click the "non-button" in the middle instead ![]() Anyway, iPod newbie question #1: Any benefit from recoding every CD to AAC instead of using the 192K MP3 files I have already? It'd have to be a BIG benefit, since there's 150+ CDs on my PC ... Also, you can "sync all" to the iPod, or you can "sync these" to the iPod, but there isn't any "sync all except" option? |
| ||||
| Ian, Can't answer the MP3 vs AAC question for you except to say re-rip one or two favorites and listen to them back to back. If you can't hear a "BIG benefit" then don't bother with the 148 others! As far as a sync except option, the only way I can think to do it is with the smart playlists. I'm pretty sure you can build boolean arguments there that have is / is not or contains / does not contain, so you can probably build a playlist that has all that you want but excludes what you don't want. The other option is to set it to manual updating which isn't as much work as you'd think. As for the UI, I'm sure you'll get used to it. The |< and >| are really only for track selection. The wheel, the center button, menu and play are the navigation ones. Welcome to the iPod owners club... maybe you'll own a Mac one day yet..! ![]() Religion is like a huge dog. | When the tranny in the MINI went, Louis went to retrieve my iPod out of the flexible dock (that has been nothing but trouble since I bought it). He broke it. I wasn't upset (as I stated it was nothing but trouble since I bought it). It gave me an idea. I liked the Belkin Tune Dock I had but it was very inconvient to play with it in the cup holders under the toggle switches. Nearly impossible to take out (which meant there were very few software updates and general music changes performed on it). These are all the reasons I liked the flexible dock. So I got the new style cup holder for the MINI and put the Tune Dock in the cup holder. Now there is no buzz, it is easily accessible and we have a cup holder where there didn't used to be one. Holds the Street Pilot when I am using it. Just wanted to put an end to the saga of the buzzing iPod. ![]() "Buy you a soda after the game?" |
