Offline | I have had multiple issues with the HP all-in-one software hijacking my computer so often that I was forced to call Baker over and offer him libations - He cleared a bunch of stuff out and so far so good (almost a year) We return you now to the regularly scheduled program Nigel the Silver |

Offline | Red Sox (like they don't have enough money too) should sue Monster Cable for infringement - The Green Monster came into being in 1947 and Monster Cable not until 1979 (when Noel Lee's lousy band, Asian Wood, wasn't making him enough money) We return you now to the regularly scheduled program Nigel the Silver |

| Rabid Motorer | Sooooo, who's familiar with the disassembly procedure for a 1st-gen MacBook? I spilled half of my morning coffee on it this morning. And that was a perfectly good cup of Sumatran. I've managed to pop off the ctrl key (and get it back on) and it looks like the key caps sit in sort of a sealed-ish cavity. That's good because it probably means the majority of the innards of my computer stayed clean, but bad because I think it means I won't be able to just pop the keyboard out and run it through the dishwasher... |

Offline | Or maybe not.... What model are you running? This one: MacBook Core Duo Disassembly: MacBook Parts Or this one: MacBook Core 2 Duo Disassembly: MacBook Parts Buy a new keyboard/top case. Follow the guides for the "Upper Case". You'll be living with weird occurrences with the machine until you do. |

| Rabid Motorer | I've got the first one, Core Duo. 1st gen, 2.0GHz BlackBook. A rubbing alcohol bath will probably be the first step. It's loosening up just by typing on it, so aside from the stench of stale coffee (thank God I drink it black!) I think it'll be livable. (Isn't it odd that the built-in dictionary in Panther recognizes "liveable" as a word, yet the spell-check thinks it's "livable"? I forget my spelling rules, but the former looks better to me...) |

| MINI2 Master | BTW...we missed some more faxes on thursday because, surprise surprise, the printer had crashed about lunchtime. Forgot about those pictures. I tried getting them off at work, but using two different card readers, apparently when you insert a 4gig SD card in an non SDHC reader, windows completely freezes until you remove it. I'll email them to you.Not good. AFAIK it goes right through to the motherboard. That's one of the negatives with the macbook, they keyboard is not its own piece that keeps liquid off the board. Not that it all can't be cleaned. I probably have the manual somewhere if you need it (email me). |

| Rabid Motorer | Actually, I wish I had that option. I used Parallels on my MacBook at my last two jobs, but at this one, I can't bring non-company hardware within 100 feet of the place. I've thought about changing jobs just so I can use a Mac again. Windows just sucks your soul out. I kind of get even by running Linux in VMWare. I'm going to try stuffing OS X into a VM one of these days... |

| Rabid Motorer | Since everything's still working (and I'm still backing up with Time Machine) I think I'm ok. The coffee spilled on the right side of the keyboard, so I'm expecting the SuperDrive to be toast. It never really worked that well, anyway, however, so that's not a huge loss. And I have an external FireWire DVD burner. I really want a new iMac. I'm not sure this is enough motivation... Can anyone (Josh? Gavin?) suggest a good place to sell off my old PowerMac? It's a dual-G4 500MHz PM with 1.5GB of RAM and a fair bit of storage. Doesn't officially support Leopard, but I think it's feasible to install it on there. My MacBook transcodes video with VisualHub in a fraction of the time, but the PM is still a useable machine... If I could get a couple hundred bucks for it, I'd put that toward a 20" iMac. |

![]() Pirates in my ear | Question for the shutterbugs: I'm looking to get a point-and-shoot. Needs to be small (it will mainly be used while on the bike), has to have some type of anti-shake and quick response time between pressing the shutter and the picture actually capturing. I know P&S's are slow, but if I spot something while on the bike, I don't have all day to wait for the camera to focus and capture the scene. And it has to be sub-$200, I'm not looking for anything great and it's going to get beat around. I looked at the Nikon L18 but doesn't seem to get great reviews, and right now the Fuji Finepix is looking pretty good. It also helps that it comes in blue (matches the bike ). |

| Resident Panpsychist | Returning to the Mac Fold The school will be replacing the best PC notebook I have ever used (HP Compaq nc6320, 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with a Mac Book Pro in a couple of months. It will have 2 GB of memory and a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Thus, the school has taken a big leap forward by adopting bi-platform support! This means that I will need to run Parallels or VMware to be compatible with some specialized school applications that do not have a Mac version. Of course, I fully intend to transfer all my photography support (Lightroom, PSCS, etc.) to the Mac "side". Has anyone a preference for Parallels 3.0 vs. VMware Fusion? They seem so similar in features and my research hasn't yielded any reports of appreciable performance gains between the two. Are there compelling reasons for purchasing one over the other? Also, being an MS Flight Simulator junkie, I was wondering if anyone knows whether either virtual machine has proven to run FS without problems? I know both products have DirectX 8+ and OpenGL support, though I can't find a specific reference to FS operating properly. | Rabid Motorer | Parallels was the first out the door with virtualization software for Intel Macs and I bought and used version 2.something until arriving at my Mac-deficient current employer. I would probably buy VMWare, at this point, because I've heard general grumbling about Parallels' lack of customer support. In general, I just get the feeling that VMWare has their act together and put a little more polish on their product. Can't speak to the MSFS compatibility, however. |
