Winslow's Tire Request...

Hey gang,

I need to replace those 17" Perrelli that I have on my car (one is almost bald). I have both 16" and 17" alloy rims, with my winters on the 16" currently. I was wondering what I should get. Money is an issue, as I am buying a house currently but I have budgeted about 500 for tire replacement. So what should I get?

Hi Chris,

I saw your name on the front page of My Yahoo!

I loved my Goodyear F1s, but this go around went with the Goodrich KDW instead. Both have pretty cool tread patterns. The F1 is a great tire. On Tirerack's paper the KDW looks as good

Chris are you looking at runflats? When I dump my Pirellis I will go with conventional tires. Do you have snows on the 16 rims?

So many tire choices, so little time (and $)

Ahhh... One of my favorite subjects. Some of us autocrosser types go a little nuts about tire choices.

First, I'll assume you're looking for a non-runflat summer tire with great dry & reasonable wet handling performance. Could all of those assumptions possibly be correct? I'll also assume you want to keep your snows on your existing 16's.

Next, I have to admit I'm a big fan of 16's vs. 17's. If you chose a tire of the same size & aspect ratio as the 17's (205/45), you'll pay less $ & get better acceleration + in effect lower the car 1/2", with perhaps a small penalty in gas mileage. I'll attach my "Tire calculator" .XLS (I seem to recall you're one of the Mac clan, so don't know if you can use it...)

If it was my car, I'd dump the S-so-called-Lites on eBay & try to find some R84's (X-lite) or even look at some of the alloys that Tire Rack has for about $109-129. I like my Monza "fake SSR's" ala' my avatar & sig 'cause they're SCCA stock-legal (16x6.5), but they're about $150 ea. You probably couldn't get enough $ for the S-Lites to afford the wheels, but customizing opportunities abound. Anyway, think about it 'cause you'll save about $70+ on a set of 16 vs. 17" tires.

I noticed Tire Rack has quite a few interesting low-$ options. If you decide on a size & limit your search to a couple of performance levels, you get a very useful quick comparison + more in-depth info from the survey & test results. For instance, I was looking at 205/45-16's & came up with the Fuzion ZRi (made by Bridgestone) for $73, the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 for $70 ($91 in 17"), the Yokohama Parada Spec-2 for $80 ($96 in 17"), the Yokohama AVS ES100 for $82 ($99 in 17"), the BFG g-Force Sport for $70 and the Avon Tech M500 for $89. I'd actually place a little more stock in Tire Rack's owner surveys than any of us individual nutcases.

OK, so ends my post of the month - hope this helps a little.

Dump the run-flats. I replaced my P-Zero's with Toyo Proxies 4, love them. Good value for the money.

Only other person I've ever seen mention these.
I run 215-50 16 Traction T/As. Been very happy with the tires. Good dry and wet traction.
They're around $109 ea.

Leave your snow tires on for David's summer Hudson Bay trip.

I saw those, the reviews look good, and they got good raitings. I think I might go with them.

Just waiting to settle on the house so I know how much left over I have.

How much longer on DUCTTAPE?

They said Monday, but I got a tad testy in my reply email and they are going to see if it can be today. Afterall, Monday will be 28 days. That's a lot of time to bolt some panels on and off.

If you want to wait a week, I'll give you a driving review. As to a looks review, they are a winner for me.

nah, I'm charging .50c for each read of the review. I should get these down to, oh, say $114.50 in no time.

It really is amazing but try as I might I just can't seem to find tires cheaper than tire rack. And for the 'level' of these tires, it seems about ball park. The other I considered was the F1, which I have had before and loved.

Me too!

I have spent the last several weeks looking at different reviews and ratings here , Tirerack NAM, magazines etc. and since Maine state law requires me to stay with a size that is on the door jam (not 215s) and a shortage of $$$ prevents buying new wheels so I am staying with the 205/45/17 size nonrunflats. Michelin PilotPS2s are the best overall rated in several places. Think Ian has them. Anybody here? Need to order them tomorrow for a trip to Loudon on the 17th. Drivers' Skill School only for me ---no track this time.

Like those you got Ducktape, they are my second choice, but I am still wavering....

I took a rather spirited, long way home tonight. Not bad tires. They grip very well. Probalem I had was I seemed to be airborne a lot, which meant I obviously had no traction. (The twisties, up here in Harriman Park) However, I think when I was on the road, it did well.

I will be driving more this weekend

Kosei / Yokohama Combo

Well, after looking for a while, I, too, ordered new wheels and tires.

Had to either replace a couple of the Pirelli P-Zero Neros and stay with the heavy stock wheels or make the change.

I've ordered the white 16 x 7.5 Kosei K1 Racing wheels and Yokohama AVS ES100 tires, mounted and balanced from Tire Rack. Should be here tomorrow or Friday, in time for a week's break in before the ADSS and Cabin Fever track day at NHIS.

Based on Tire Rack reviews and a conversation with one of their tech specialists we just went with the 215/45-17 Avon Tech M500's. We originally planned to go to 16's but had to stick with the S-Lites due to the untimely demise of our International Harvester freezer.
