|midnight*racer||my power steering has just failed on a 2003 r53 73k miles , do bmw still offer goodwill gesture on the pumps? or should I source my own part and repair?|

I'm concerned my dealer ripped me off. I have a 2006 Cooper S with 47,000 miles, garage kept. My steering developed hard spots when turning the steering wheel. I checked online and found it sounded like the lower steering shaft so I told the dealer service department that. They checked it out and said it was the pump. I argued, they insisted, so I told them if they changed the pump and it didn't fix the problem I wasn't paying and they agreed. So I sat in the lounge for a couple of hours then went to check on the car and saw the tech had removed the steering shaft and was working on it. When he started to put it back in I asked the service manager what was up with taking the steering shaft out and he said when the tech had the pump out he heard the steering shaft making noise so he took it out and lubricated it, no charge. |
For one thing how would he have heard the shaft making noise when the pump was out? I think he replaced the pump and it didn't fix it so he worked on the steering shaft. I did speak with the general manager of the dealership and she stood behind her tech. What do you guys think? Any recourse?

Just signed up to this forum as I found the advice on the power stearing problems excellent. My power stearing failed on Saturday 9th April 2016 in morrisons car park!!
The other members on this site gave me enough information to enable me to call mini uk who where very helpful and told me to call my local mini dealer in Hull. I have called them this morning and they told me to bring it in asap so they an assess what the problem is (as if I don't know) .
They have not mentioned any cost so far which find interesting, I am sure that will come.
I am going to the dealership today. They said they may be able to look at it today and forward the request of a 'good will gesture ' of fixing the stearing to mini uk.
The chap at mini uk did say they are aware of the 'failure' in some models of Mini!

Look online for a second hand unit off Ebay or a new unit from Amazon.com. Plus there's a video on Youtube by Mod Mini on how to change it yourself. It's pretty easy.

My lovely Mini has been whining more and more and louder and louder - I'm told this may be the power steering pump? Or motor?
Is it dangerous to keep driving? I've been quoted £600-700 by Halfords to mend it.!!!

Count me in. My power steering died on me this morning then it revived itself a few hours later. So I took the small pump fan off and found out that was siezed so it looks like the power steering pump "shut" itself down as a safety measure until it cooled. Great. After I went on Ebay and bought a grimey second hand pump and fan from UK! |
All good, I'll clean the old one out and keep it as a spare or in case any Sydney Mini owners need a hand.

|RDMac||Thanks. I was actually recommended a company literally around the corner from me for a refurb called ECU testing. Local BMW/Mini Specialist quoted 2 hours labour and got it in immediately.|

Get one of these and DIY. Overall cost similar to getting it done at the dealers but with the added lifetime warranty on the unit. |

2003 MCS with 75k on the clock. Power steering failed a couple of miles from home so limped back with the Christmas turkey in the boot!
Left it on drive untouched over Christmas. Started it up and there was no power steering, reversed in and out a couple of times and pump kicked into action.
Turned the engine off and the pump continued. Disconnected the battery and shut the boot .... DOH! boot wouldn't re-open to re-connect battery as it's electric.
Connected jump leads to battery + terminal under bonnet to power up the car and open the boot (no rear access through rear seats). Left the rear seats collapsed for next time!
Phoned Mini UK customer service and was told that there was no guarantee of a good will gesture and would need to pay £150+ for non-refundable diagnostics and also pay to get the car transported to nearest dealer (no home relay with AA).
Local dealer said earliest to get the car in is in 3 weeks.

|Green Turtle||I had my electric power steering unit on my 2003 mini cooper get so hot the cabling coming from it caught fire. Luckily it was replaced under insurance and I put it out before anything else caught fire too.|

Hopefully I am after some desperate advice, after driving the other night to a small village 3 miles away The power steering failed on my Wifes 2005 Cooper s Cab, then after contacting Mini North Oxford, ( who are the most un-helpful garage I have ever been to) Having worked in the Motor Trade for many years, i was told under a gesture of good will the pump can be claimed for, we after calling the Garage, and arranging to Drive the car over as the Breakdown service would not take as Officially the car was drivable!!!!!! ( be very careful when doing this!!! as the answer below is from North Oxford Mini) on the way over not only was the pump working off and on, but I then lost the Speedo, the ABS, the airbags, came on, the Fuel gauge went the rev counter so forth and So on, then having waited for nearly and hour to be seen, not a major prob!!!
notes where exchanged and re-iterated that the pump failed first????? having now had the call, firstly they had agreed that the pump and the alternator would be changed under Good will, Ye Hah, the next day I git a phone call saying mini are now revoking the claim as they felt after further diagnosis they felt the Alternator is the problem, as its only giving out 11amps Now when I asked the question ? to their technical guys they have confirmed that both parts have failed, and both require to be changed, now hears the bit THEY ARE NOT GOING TO COVER AS THET FEL IT WAS THE FAULT OF THE ALTERNATOR AS I HAD DRIVEN THE MINI TO THE GARAGE< AND THAT THE FAULT WAS MINE FOR DRIVING IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!, I have asked during the diagnostic, surely if the faults was found ? how could it determined that which failed first ???? is it the Chicken or the Egg so to speak, To me being a Qualified Motorcycle Technician, and knowing my way around engine's when questioned they have now stated it can't be determined which was first but they are still not going to cover??? so £1500.00 to change an Alternator and a steering pump on a car which is worth £6000.00 but if I pay, the garage and get an engineers report and find the parts are at fault, then I can go to small claims and fight for my Money back.

I have issues with pump. Sometimes i loose powersteering and sometimes it wont turn on at first time and now it got worse. It wont turn off. I was late to work so i took my grandmother car to go to work and it didnt stop until battery gone. Ive seen tutorial to change pump and i have friends who are good in mechanic so wont be difficult to change it. My question is: if i buy the pump and replace it will all this problems gone? Is there anything else besides charge battery and change the CHF oil that need to be done? |

Just wanted to thank this forum and particulary this thread. My Power steering pump started working intermittantly last thursday and so after reading this thread I thought I'd chance my arm and speak to Mini UK, bearing in mind my Cooper S is an 04 with 106k. They said take it to a Mini Centre and let them diagnose it. |
To my surprise, they agreed to pay for the pump, but not the fitting and diagnosis. So I picked the car up last night and its back to normal and still a treat to drive :-)
