Offline | Bummer! Rear-ended today At a stop light, I looked into rear view mirror and saw him comming with his head down dialing on his cell phone. WHAM! Put his 91 prelude imprint on my back bumper at about 20mph and bent the Magnaflow exhaust. Oh, yea - backup sensors are stuck on. No serious damage other than my back is sore. Off to East Bay Mini for repairs. Lets be carefull out there - especially in town! kmickey IB/W MCS |

Offline | Well, so far $2500 woth of damage and (2) days off of work for the bruising. My insurance company will cover a new Magnaflow exhaust. That was one expensive cell phone call for that guy. kmickey IB/W MCS |

Offline | _______________ Yep, you can be sure his insurance carrier will raise his rates. Another reason why we need a law to BAN all cell phone use while driving. New York already passed such a law. |

Offline | Unfortunately I wouldn't put a lot of faith in that. I've noticed idiots don't suddenly become smart after doing something idiotic. If they did then there wouldn't BE any idiots left. Having been rear ended recently you have my sympathy kmickey |

Offline | kmickey, I sort of chimed-in in the Performance forum... I really feel your pain. I saw your car at Ray's place when Randy was here! She sounded really sweet on the dyno... Getting the magnaflow again? A few more have come to market... Hands-feee does appear to be the trend guys. Not only is it safer, I find it better conversation-wise, to hear the other party. That being said, to be fair, the same rule should apply to all communication devices, cb's, ham radios and our fsr type radios some of us use on our ventures... Offline | That really sucks! Whenever I see people on cell phones without at least using a hands-free device, it really chaps my hide! I hope you and your MINI are recovering well, and I hope to see you soon at one of NorCal MINIs' next runs. Offline | I'm very sorry to hear about your accident. I'm very glad to hear that you came out OK. Most importantly, if you haven't already, make sure you have a good doctor document any/all your injuries and do a thorough exam, just in case (heaven forbid), something lingering occurs, or an injury becomes noticable later. One of my greatest fears about driving our MINIs is the rear ender. We seem to have decent protection at the front and sides due to airbags and crush zones. If you had a rear passenger, (since I sometimes have rear passengers), would you mind telling me how they might have survived your crash? i.e. was there any intrusion into the back seat passenger's compartment? Here's to a speedy recovery to you and your car! MotorOn |

Offline | It was just me and my 9yr old son. He is just fine. I'm still bruised and sore. Mainly in my back and my feet. Doc said cause I had my feet on the pedals and back aginst the seat during the crash. I watched the car crash into me in my rear view mirror, so I guess I really tensed up waiting for the impact. The Mini faired pretty well considering a 15mph (or so) impact: Bent bumper/crash bar, Magnaflow exhaust, parking distance sensors are shot, bottom (spoiler) panel is melted due to the exhaust is bent. The car dosen't go into the shop until the 18th. I drove the car yesterday and now I'm hearing all kinds of rattles around the dash. Oh, the battery was dead (maybe damaged). The onboard computer shows I'm getting 7mpg and the door locks are having a hard time unlocking. Well, I'm thankfull that my son is OK and the jerk that hit us wasn't going any faster. I would not want to be in that back seat during a rear end crash or for that matter any kind of crash. kmickey IB/W MCS |

Offline | good advice? Glad everyone was okay. That acts as a reminder for all of us to keep one eye on the rearview mirror. If it doesn't appear that the car behind you sees you, lay on the horn! You may look like a fool to others around you standing in traffic, but you've got to do it to get the attention of the idiot behind you. I've resorted to doing this while driving cars much bigger than a MINI. Safe motoring to all! |
