SF hotels

Hey my californian chums

I'll be making my annual pilgrimage to the ski slopes of California in March next year
Thing is I'll be spending a few days in SF before I fly home. Last year I stayed down by the warf which wasn't too brilliant, totally dead after 8ish
Can anybody recommend a decent hotel downtown??

Thanks,

Martin

Hey Martin

Welcome to NorCal again Are you going to rent a car here? If so, there is a lot of good place to stay around SF, but if you are not going to drive, then I think SF get better public transportation.

I'd go for something on the edge of downtown so that you could head into North Beach and maybe Chinatown in the evening. Of course there are some great hotels around Union Square and up on Nob Hill, but then your budget becomes a serious consideration.

Check the Powell Hotel, at the corner of Powell and Market. Great location at the intersection of all public transit and just a couple blocks from Union Square. We got it for $79 a night prepaid through hotels.com in Sept 03. It's not classy, but it was comfortable and very convenient.

I'll have a huge SUV as per norm
Main reason why we're staying in SF is for the Chinese food. Probably the best in the world and cheap too
I'm after a hotel where we can walk to most places, e.g. shops, chinatown etc. Not too worried about cost. Probably pay up to about $150 for a room

Has anybody been to the Jelly Bean factory?????
I've always passed the sign on the way out of SF and maybe will pay it a visit this time round. Is it worth a look???

Try the Sheraton Downtown, the Nikko downtown, or the Chinatown Holiday Inn

Hey Martin,

The Jelly Belly factory is a fun place to visit. I live very close to the factory. If you need any help on info. or a mini escort let me know when you'll be passing thru. There's also a Budweiser beer factory near by that give tours. If you're into beer, you should drop by and take a tour.

Good idea!!! May be we can make a jelly bean tour in March, My gf use to go to UC Davis, and I drive by it many many times, but never have chance to visit the factory. It should be fun for a MINI jellly bean tour

I've been there a couple of times and its pretty cool. I assume they still have the giant Jelly Belly portaits. The one of Margaret Thatcher was quite impressive.

If you want to stay at a nice place AND have easy access to Chinatown, stay at The Juliana. It's on Bush St. in Nob Hill and only a block away from the Grant Street gates of Chinatown. It's also just a couple blocks from Union Square for shopping. Do a search for their web site -- I know they have one. It's a very nice and reasonable hotel that even serves a high tea during afternoons that's less formal than the full-on British version. I stayed there a week when I first moved to SF. Definitely would recommend.

I've heard good things about the Juliana as well.
