Offline | All British Field Meet (featuring Mini), SOVERN Vintage Racing; Sep 1-4 To make certain that everyone is at least alerted to one of the best weekends of the year for people who enjoy cars, vintage racing, close contact with the cars and teams in the pits, and people watching. Mini and MINI are featured this year! Labor Day weekend at Portland International Raceway This has always been a family weekend at PIR, but it's much better now that the SOVREN vintage racing shares the same dates and venue. You can circulate to whatever interest has the highest priority. --> Please forward to anyone interested in Mini or MINI. There will be bunches of the classic cars from local clubs, and a very significant number of new MINIs. Registration is $35 to put a car on the field, participate in the autocross, and thus parking. Register before 8/31. ### 2006 Columbia River Classic (9/2-4) http://www.crclassic.com/generalinfo/ http://www.sovren.org/competition/competition.htm There will be Vintage CAN-AM (these are the real cars baby!), the vintage SCCA racing classes such as A Production Corvette Stingray 427 or C Production Lotus Elan S-4 or H Production Austin Healey Sprite, Formula cars like Formula Ford, and sports racing. ### All British Field Meet (9/2-4) http://www.abfm-pdx.com/2006/general.htm http://www.abfm-pdx.com/2006/classes.htm There were already over 550 cars when I registered. The show on the field is all day Saturday, with People's Choice Awards about 3:00pm that afternoon. The British cars hold a participant autocross during the Noon break each day. The family can take a Land Rover off-road adventure ride. There is food, music, and stuff to buy. A swap meet (parts, cars, and memorabilia) is on Sunday. ### Friday night (9/1) From the KGON-FM 92.3 website about the weekend http://www.kgon.com/sectional.asp?id=4685 Join KGON Labor Day Weekend for The 2006 Columbia River Classic presented by Key Private Bank benefiting the Boys & Girls Aid Society of Oregon. For more information on the schedule of events including Party tickets online now at crclassic.com. Downtown Portland Features the Most Powerful Cars Ever Built on Friday, September 1st Can-Am cars, the most powerful and fastest cars to compete in the history of road racing, are set to take over the South Park Blocks in front of the Oregon Historical Society, located at 1200 SW Park Avenue, for a special event from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1, 2006. The cars are in Portland for the Columbia River Classic vintage car race. The special event, Can-Am in the City, is being held as a benefit for The Boys & Girls Aid Society of Oregon. 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of Can-Am racing. At its height in the early 1970s, Can-Am racing was the most popular motor sport in North America. Unlike today’s cars on the Indy or NASCAR circuits, each Can-Am car was unique. The rules governing car design were simple --two seats, enclosing bodywork, some basic safety requirements--other than that, anything goes. Many of the cars were outrageous with snowmobile engines used to create active down force or turbo- or super-charged engines delivering well over 1,000 horsepower. Can-Am cars were driven by some of the most famous and talented drivers including Dan Gurney, Roger Penske and Bruce McLaren. The top automotive companies in the world - Porsche, UOP, McLaren, Lola, Chaparral and Ford - competed to build or supply Can-Am cars. Among the cars that will be in the Park Blocks is a stunning 1972 Ferrari 312P NART (North American Racing Team) Spyder. With a 4 Liter Colombo engine this Ferrari was driven at the 24 hours of both Le Mans and Daytona, and the 12 hours at Sebring. A number of famous drivers competed in the car including Coco Chinetti, Zeccoli, Andruet, Derek Bell, Vic Elford and the current owner/driver John Goodman. '02 MINI Cooper CVT (prod. date: 6/12/2002; Indi Blue/Black roof, R-81 7-hole 15x5.5" or NZO 16x6.5") '67 Austin Cooper S 1275 Mk1 (build date: 6/26/1967; Tartan Red/Black Roof, Minilite 10x4.5" or 10x6.0") |
