only problem is your pulling the focus away from the subject.. the background is better off being lighter/darker/duller than the subject in order for it to stand out.

EMPTY SPACE NEEDS FILLING....
but it has to be something that wont get me banned

All excellent. Just one extra snippet, might be useful: -
Use a layer mask to define the area. It's much easier than using 'history' to edit and correct - then just use black or white 'paint' on the mask to adjust.

Hi Pete,
Quite new to photoshop and haven't really got the hang of masks etc. Any chance you could talk us all through the use of a layer mask for this?

Here you go Si, this is quite a good tutorial for masks and getting used to them..
