Best photoshop software?

Hi guys, I really enjoy looking at photos which have been edited in photoshop, seeing what crazy things can be done so I was looking at getting photoshop myself. Does anyone have suggestions on which is the best version, where I can get it and how much? I have windows vista and would mostly use it for editing photos of my mini

Thanks for your help!

James.

I've no idea how software licensing works, but CS3 is the latest version of Photoshop, but CS2 would be fine, if you can pick up a cheap 2nd hand copy you'll be more than happy. There are alternatives, but Photoshop is the bees knees.

I keep meaning to check out GIMP and GIMPShop. They are free opensource alternatives to Photoshop, but with a few less features. GIMPShop makes it have a similar menu system to Photoshop.

when I get some time I'll give them a try, as the cost of Photoshop licences isnt cheap.

A second hand copy would do. Just make sure its legit. I cant remember if it authenticates the licence key over the internet. If its a dodgy copy it wouldnt work.

Definetly check out Gimp as it may do what you need it to do for a lot less. Photoshop rocks, but it is far from cheap.

GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

Gimp has been around for a really long time so it is tested it just had a primary market of Linux and UNIX.

Couldn't get on with GIMP myself, but then I've used Photoshop since the mid-90s so it's hard to change.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE photoshop and I am one of those people that actually paid for it. However, looking back, I could have done everything that I wanted to do with Gimp which is free and used that cash elsewhere. So, if you have never used a product like that, Gimp is not a bad deal and it has matured well.

I also paid, but then it's a business expense.

Is Photoshop different to Adobe Photoshop? Or are they the same thing?

Plus before that I'd just use Abi's office Macs with it on, seeing as we live with the office that's never too much of a chore!

Yes, for you pro's that have income relying on it I highly recommend it but Gimp is not a bad tool and been around for a long time. For us home users that might actually use it like four or five times before we get bored of it, photoshop can be a waste of money.

it's best to buy as a CS package, then you get Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and a few other bits. Not bad, and a CS package is about the same as Quark Express alone!!!

I can say that Indesign is fantastic as is Illustrator, as I do all my decal artwork as vector graphic in Illustrator which gives perfect control of size and color.

CS2 is more easier to use than CS3 but then CS3 has the HDR option,

Bit Torrent has them on offer
