Looking to buy mini

I'm am 19 years old and I'm currently looking to buy a mini. I was just looking for some advise on what to lookout for when buying a mini. I am willing to spend a max of 4500 on a mini and was wondering what model would be best for me. I cannot get insured on a cooper s. I would like to get a sportier model. Are there any age minis I should miss or look out for?

These MINI Buyers Guides are a good starting point:

I would suggest the post mid-2004 facelift R50 MINI with the stronger Getrag gearbox. MINI One for lower insurance or Cooper if you can afford the insurance for a sportier performance but both are fun to drive. :)

Thanks for the advise. I wanna try to get a cooper. The coopers I have looking at for the amount of money I have are like 53/03 plates.

Earlier pre-facelift Cooper/Ones are fine, I have one myself but do check the gearbox very carefully for any bearing noises in any gear (with the radio turned off!) and change its gearbox oil once you find a good one as it is not part of any official service. Look for a well cared for example with a good service history from new.....there are plenty on sale so be choosy. :)
