Offline | Quite an interesting read! I'm very impressed with this level of tuning with the MINI. I can completely understand why you strip your engine down even if it isn't broken, there's just no other way of checking that the physical materials of the internals are sound otherwise. Coming from an Aerospace background there's quite a few methods to go through, but I'll simplify quickly. Phase 1, destructive testing, see what you can do to destroy what you are testing. In the case of current engine development, run an engine beyond 100% thrust for extended periods until it fails. This is very costly and I can't imagine you want to be doing this when you only have 5 or so blocks to be playing with. If the engine gets destroyed to a level you can't ascertain the cause of total failure then you have wasted an engine and gained no results. Phase 2, once you have an idea of what the engine can take before it breaks, you start development up to but not beyond previous development. Once running tests you then disassemble the engine and perform NDT on it to check structural integrity of the material. You're looking for fatigue on a mollecular level here and it's something that NEEDS to be done when you're pushing the envelope. Phase 3, in production testing. Testing the engine once you're happy with your developments in the scenario that it would be used. RMW seems to have done phase 2 and 3, maybe not phase 2 to the level required by Aerospace but it's very commendable that someone is willing to do that. Testing and Development without full knowledge of the continual stresses, not just the initial stresses being applied to the machinery is not the best way to ensure reliability. Theoretical knowledge of how much an engine should take, and phase 3 testing is not enough to ensure a bomb-proof product. |

Offline | it's nice to see someone who appreciates the hard work it takes to make a product that can take the abuse that we subject them to. We have some more interesting things coming for this engine in a supercharged version as I think this is the best for road racing applications. I already have a turbo car with this engine and it is easily the most powerful Mini Cooper ever built. Manufacturer and Custom Mini Tuning |

Offline | After much planning I have decided that I want to have my mini taken to 2.0 though I am bothered by numbers... currently I have a JCW with a JCW head number string, also if I was to change my engine then I have to change my DVLA book to the new number (is this record anywhere) Would it be possible to buy the parts required and hand to a quality UK based mechanic / engine reconditioners so the engine numbers stay the same also, would it be possible to send the current head over for machining and new parts? or would it be more beneficial to strip the engine and ship it to you with the head and end up with an engine externally the same? I just would like to keep the numbers the same as should the car ever in its life go concourse then the head number will be off an S and not JCW. I see this being a good method of tuning without anything visually being changed. I am just running this through so I could make plans of how to go about the conversion. I supppose I would prefure to send the engine over and let you work on it. With the pistons have you used the same material? if not have you looked at the possibility of making them lighter? ie higher grade material but less of it? same with the valves. it would be nice to provide some more torque to the engine. Thanks for your time |
