I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this were true Rams Have noticed mine drinks the oil like it is going out of fashionl!

Are BMW stating that the R56 engine "uses" or "burns" a liter of oil every 1000 miles? I've noticed blue smoke coming out of my exhaust a few times which is a bit worrying!!!

I agree, but it's going to cost Mini many thousands to repair or replace all the faulty R56 engines. Anyone know just how many have been made?

That's what the Dealer states, it's not necessarily BMW's opinion The MCS is very frugal with oil, if you have excessive oil consumption then you probably have an oil leak

I wouldn't know for sure but its got to run into tens of thousands

The problem is that many of these owners will not bother to do anything about it, maybe just sell it on when its time for a car change, thereby lumbering the new mini owner with the problem
A concerted effort as a group, might just push this fix properly ahead into a final resolve!

Possibly in your cars case it wasn't the spring tensioner that was giving the trouble!?

Quite possible that THIS was your problem and now is resolved?!
I hope it is for you!

Got mine back on Tuesday this week after having the appropriate parts changed, and to date no repeat of the clatter :-)

Early days I know, but will post again should it return.....

Hi Bluebabe.

I have followed this thread with great interest and optimism especially now 118 has had no problems since his "fix"

I am with you re trying as a group to do something about this problem.

My concerns are.....

My MCS has done the cold start rattle on 4-5 occasions since December. It has been to the dealers and a spring tensioner is on order........but I am a little reluctant to have my engine stripped down to have something fitted that may not do the trick.

I wonder just how many complaints MINI have had?........there must have been a fair few for the tensioner fix to be diagnosed.

In the scheme of things the amount of people on this forum that have complained is fairly small and insignificant but that shouldn't preclude the evidence of us all to be submitted in order for MINI to take some notice.

My only real fear is that MINI could hang this out until warranties have expired thus saving themselves the angst and costs that they may be liable for.

Yours and others views really appreciated with regards to having the work done and compiling a list to submit to MINI.

P.

My best guess would be that about 250,000 R56s have been built to date. Not sure what proportion would be MCSs, as that seems to be the only version affected but would guess it might be about 25,000. Presumable not all of these have experienced the noise.

My 2008 MCS has been in the shop for a week today. So far replaced the rear main seal that was leaking. I was told that a field engineer was going to be there last Friday to look at it to find the rattle, I found out Tuesday that only the service technician has looked at it. My SA asked what day would be good for me to come down and start the car for them so i could point out the sound so they can confirm it's the "NORMAL" noise they all make. Needles to say I'm upset. I have been contacted twice by Mini USA before Tuesday and now when I call they don't return my calls. I agree a class action suit may be the answer to get Mini to address this issue. I may even start a web site like "isyourminialemon.com" or something I will have to think of a good name so it will be dedicated to the cause.

Unfortunately I am not clever enough to do something like this, but this, in my opinion, is exactly what needs to be done

We def need to get something together. I remember someone possibly S8RAH? saying that they would initiate once the numbers were there!
A 2 pronged attack here and from the US would be powerful. Like a PINCER movement that will grab BMW/MINI by the Goolies!

What about a simple thread/sticky on here.....along the lines of.

MINI COLD START INFORMATION

1. Does your car suffer from the cold start rattle Y/N

2. Model/Year of Manufacture

3. Has your car been back to Mini for any remedial work Y/N

4. What work was carried out

5. If remedial work has been carried out.....has the cold start rattle returned

The thread would have to strictly comply with this sort of information without posters straying off topic.....that way we can easily compile a true list of those experiencing the problem.

Any other ideas from more "forum aware" persons greatly appreciated

There is a database thread over at NAM. I think it may take more of an effort and having a dedicated website that when googled pops in front of potental buyers may get some attention from Mini.

another 1 here!

Hi All,

My R56 MCS has gone into the Dealers this morning for new Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and something else ( sprockets I think ). Fingers Crossed but not expecting Miracles!

I have had the car from New ( Nov 06 Build ) In the first 2 years I experienced the “Cold Start Rattle” approximately once a month. During this time I had to take the car back numerous times for other faults and each time I always mentioned this “Rattle”, however the Dealer kept telling me that they had not had any reports of this happening on any other vehicles. ( and of course mine did not perform it’s tractor impersonation for the Mechanics whenever it went in )

Anyhow, 3 months ago I started experiencing loss of power ( only for a few seconds and only every few days ) the car went back to the dealers 3 times to rectify this, the 3rd time they told me that the Timing had been out on the car so their “Computer” wasn’t reading the loss of power fault correctly, so they adjusted the Timing.

Since the timing was adjusted luckily or unluckily ( depending on how you look at it ) I now have the “Rattle” every morning and every night when the engine is cold. Obviously the dealer has now had to take notice and do something, hence why it has gone in today. Oh, and they have now also told me they have 1 other customer with this problem.

Sorry for the long winded version, just thought it best to give all the details.

Will let you know how I get on,

Stu
