excellent, thats a really nice gesture from them tbh, they didn't have to do that did you write to them or something?

Mini USA just called and informed me that mini is off the opinion that there is nothing wrong with the car and i'm stuck with it. They told me they would not give me another car because it would make the same noise, maybe they should consider fixing the problem?

Yeah I rang em up and moaned a little bit - they said they would be back in touch - true to there word they sorted me out (the first time it went in i got 400 quid, but they have only had it half the time as last time so guess it's fair !

So far, it seems more people who have had the latest 'fix' applied are reporting that the problem has returned than those who have yet to re-experience the issue. I think I'll be waiting for the next 'fix'.

It does appear to be a 'hit or miss fix' at the moment dependent on the build date of the engine.

At least BMW/MINI appear to be taking the problem seriously which is a step in the right direction

I'm getting a little confused now It seems that when people are discussing 'their' fix, some people are mentioning just one of the following parts, while others are mentioning replacement of two or more (or even all) of these:
- cam chain,
- cam chain tensioner,
- timing chain tensioner, and
- 'sprockets' (?).

Assuming we are indeed talking about different engine parts here (and not just different terminology for the same ), it is not clear from what people report whether all of these parts were replaced on their car, or just one or more.

It could improve this thread if people with whom the cold start noise returned after their car was fixed, could clearly state (if they know) which engine parts were replaced.

TDLC, basically the dealers have a process to follow when investigating this issue (I assume this is the PUMA bulletin that has been talked about on here).
The results from these diagnostics determine what, if any, parts should be replaced.

How does one know the buiild date of the engine? What we all know is the assembly date of the vehicle but that doesn't tell me when my engine was assembled in France or when the transmission was put together in Japan.

I know that some of the engines are built in England and I figure that given modern "just in time" manufacturing processes that there isn't much of a gap between construction of the engine and assembly of the car but I don''t know that.

And would being off on the date of assembly of the engine by a week or two make a big difference? If you find out that engines built the second week in June (just to make something up) all had the rattle. How would you know when your engine was put together?

These details are shown on the vehicle logbook i.e. Chassis and Engine number. BMW/MINI will know the exact dates

Been told the same by my dealer for more than a week now... They said that all its guts are hanging out and there's a big sign on it which says "do not start engine". Nice....

On the plus side the service manager has told me that a customer she knows very well has had the updated fix and that all is well so far.
