I know that seems a bit unfair as you have had a lot of trouble with your car, but I still think this is not an universal problem for the R56. I might be proven wrong.

Good post, as you have said really, all perspectives have a place. the questions that wont be easily answered by anyone here are;
Are those having carefree motoring with their S's, not aware they really do have probs?
Or do they just not want to deal with them?
Are all S's suffering or going to suffer at some point?
Is this a widespread problem or not?
Have all problems been resolved?
Are we being fobbed off by BMW/MINI?
Should I continue buying a MINI in future?

Everybody has there own independant view on this subject. It just happens that some peoples perspective will coincide with others and some won't!
The people who have a common perspective, may join together in a common discussion possibly involving a motion to forward some action.
This in some cases is coming about as we speak.wether we do nothing or something is a debate on its own, and also has a consideration here. thats what forums are about?

We all have the possibility to be proved right or wrong! but only once we start asking the questions in the first place! Nothing can be proved if we simply do nothing!

if you want something you have to go and get it - it won't come and find you! and not only that you will get knocked back and knocked back by anyone and everyone you come into contact with.

The only hope you have is you get someone decent at the dealer on your side like I did after months and months of trying and as soon as that happened, I had a new half engine ordered and fitted within the week, then after that didn't fix the problem had a new replacement car ordered to my exact spec at no additional cost.
I still remember the words of the Service Manager when I was a few months into all of this and it was along the lines of "you haven't got a hope in hells chance of rejecting the car because of this"
Not that I wanted to reject it at all or set out to do this, that's not what its about, I did this because I wanted the car I paid for

RESPECT mate!! No one here can say you haven't tried!
I put myself in your position and think... "Oh god I just ain't gonnaa bother"!! But you did! Thats why I have great respect for your courage! If we were all like this maybe no problems in life would be around for very long! Who knows!

To the rest of you guys I would say ask yourself. Would you be able to go as far? The answer is some will some won't.
I wanna know you guys and girls who will! because in the end, you are the ones who just might make the difference!

I have just been informed that my Mini Cooper S is to be fitted with a new engine this week.
Apparently the timing chain snapped and wrecked the valves and pistons etc.

All I can say is, the sound from the engine up until the car ground to a halt. Was the same noise the Mini was making intermittently since I bought it. Though as I said in my thread, it started to make the noise all the time and even louder just before the engine broke.
I am now convinced that the cold start rattle is responsible either directly or indirectly for the damage to my engine.
The most the engine has ever been revved to is just past 4,000 rpm and very rarely at that.

I dread to think what the cost of the repair would have been had I not got six months left on the warranty!
There is nothing I can say to make the situation we are all in any better.
OK for me at the moment, but not so for those that are nearing the end of their warranty.

I started r56mcs.com web site because I new my Mini had a problem. And having surfed the web, realised that my Cooper S wasn't the only one.
So enough now BMW and dealers, of this 'charicteristic of the engine' ****. I knew my engine was going to fail. Why didn't you?
Now is the time for the recall. Before this fault buries the Mini brand for ever!

Why didn't BMW talk to Honda instead of Peugeot? Maybe this thread would not exist if they had.

Honda have made 15,000,000 V Tec engines and not one warranty recall.

Isn't there a R56 S with a Honda V Tec engine?

P.

I don't understand!

If you have only six months warranty remaining and you are a UK owner your car must have been delivered in August 2006. The first R56s were delivered in November 2006 so why is this post in the 2nd generation thread?

Honda have had their fair share of problems with the V Tec engine, especially the latest model

As regards BMW talking to Honda/Peugeot, the new Mini engine was a joint development between Mini and Peugeot......Honda were not involved.

There is not enough space in the Mini engine compartment to fit the 1978 CC V-Tec engine.

OK, so updating my post from earlier in this thread:

The car died on me last Friday, Engine warning light came on, the car sounded like a tractor! Lost most of the power. It's weird seeing a MCS struggle to get past 30mph. The car was in all day Monday and yesterday they phoned to tell me that some Valve management system is broken, which means that pistons are damaged and the engine has shut half of itself down. They think the timing chain has slipped, which has caused further damage. I AM SO GLAD that it is under warranty, I dread to think how much it would cost. Should be getting another update today, along with a courtesy car.

I am so annoyed! The car has been making noises for ages but Mini said they couldn't "reproduce the problem".

So, the car will be in for the better part of a week and I wouldn't be surprised if it required a new engine.

*shakes head in disbelief*

Concerned Mini Owner.

Say no to boredom!

I've lost count of how many engine failures I've heard of in the last week, time to get twitchy folks.

Is there anyone from a MINI dealership on these forums who can tell us what is going on? Why is MINI UK saying that no damage is caused by the engine rattle. I'm no mechanic but it sounds like some damage IS being caused. Even the worst diesel engines don't sound as bad!
