MCS Engine noise when cold

Hi Martin,

My MCS is also a November 06 build (19.5K miles) I have the problem on and off. more so when I shunt the car round to wash it. Then when I start it up the next morning and it makes the noise.

I get it more regulaly in the winter months on normal start ups.

My car is going in on Wednesday as I want to get it fixed before the waranty runs out. I have been waiting for a more permanent fix or recall, so thought I would give it a go.

Can we refer to these SIM numbers down under? I have mine scheduled this Thursday to be looked at regarding a few problems - including the engine rattle.

Maybe I could have got it sorted sooner. But my approach, as set out in my earlier posts in this thread, has been that it is just an annoying noise for which there was little evidence of serious consequences.

I did not want to wind myself up with endless visits to my dealer and time off the road but decided I would wait for a proper fix. As Helen B says, it is good to get it sorted before the warranty ends so now seems the right time to do something about it.

The noise on start up has in no way detracted from my enjoyment of ownership

Took my June 07 build MCS to the Dealer yesterday afternoon.....the 'noise' was occuring if it was parked facing down the sloping drive to the garage. This was the only time it would happen, otherwise it was OK. A restart and the 'noise stopped.

Also had a problem with a 'musical sound' from the top left of the windscreen. This would happen at speeds above 65 mph if there was a strong head or cross wind.

Just collected it from the Dealer, evidently there was a Puma Measure 7359834-02 for the wind noise which they carried out. Evidently it was due to the packing of the left side window pillar which they repaired.

They also found a Puma Measure for the engine noise and replaced the Tensioner....no details were given to me of what exactly was done!

At this stage I don't know if the two problems have been resolved.

I have the same opinion as Martin. I get really stressed when the car is with the dealers and have avoided it for as long as possible.

My car goes in tomorrow. I wonder how long they will need to keep it. I hope they dont try and fob me off!!!!

So I took my car in this morning as agreed. When I sat down with the service guy he said it was not booked in and they might not be able to look at it today. He did admit that he remembered overhearing his colleague taliking to me about it and promised to see what he could do but I might not have it back until Friday. I came away pretty unimpressed.

About 2 hrs later he rings me to say they have dismantled it and they need to change the tensioner and that it should be done by tomorrow evening. I am happy again. Just keeping my fingers crossed that the fix works.

Did they need to hear it rattle before they agreed to work on it or did they take you word for it?

I don't know about Martin, but they wanted me to leave it there on a sloping ramp overnight so I let them. The phoned me this morning and said they had fitted a new tensioner. I've done three cold starts since on our sloping drive that would normally cause the rattle.......and it was OK

The dealer took my word for it. I was expecting to be asked to demonstrate the noise but my request to have it looked at was agreed without debate.

It's 24hrs since yesterday when the Dealer replaced the tensioner on my June 07 build MCS.

They did not give any details which parts were replaced apart from the tensioner, but the engine is quieter on startup, smoother and pulls better especially at low revs. Early days yet but so far so good

Just called the dealer to ask whether I could have my MCS back today.

Turns out he now finds "it is quite a big job". Apparently they are not just replacing the tensioner but the timing chain sprockets and other bits. Should be ready tomorrow evening.

I intend to find out exactly what they replaced when I collect it.

My car is booked in next Thursday, having the car overnight this time..
They want to hear the noise, they will not do anything without hearing it they said, and they also wont accept my video on my camera of the noise either..

For all Aussies - The PuMA reference has not yet been identified here in Sydney. I took my 2007 MCS to BMW Sydney. They had to submit two PuMA records as there was nothing on the system regarding the rattle OR the melted hood scoop... unbelievable.
