It is possible that your car has this fault. My Oct 08 built car has displayed it a couple of times and now has the latest chain tensioner fitted.

You really know if you had this fault though as the car sounds horrendous. You might just be hearing normal nose at tickover, no?

Heard the noise 1 week ago !

Told to BMW France Customer Service.
I have to see with my dealer this week end....
They know the trouble......

The real question is : Has BMW really solved the default ? I don't think so...

Anyone know if there are recent updates to the PuMA?

My car should get its third tensioner next week since the previously installed fixes cured the problem only for about three months. I'm just wondering if anything else should be updated this time.

Hopefully your Dealer can answer your question.......my MCS is a June 07 build and it had a new tensioner fitted May 09. Touch wood it's been OK since, but the weather is warm

I think they don't want to fix the fault because it's a R&D mistake... So they can't fix it ! Too expansive !!!
They will solve the trouble with the next 3.0 MINI.......

I have had my Cooper S since new ( Dec 06 ) The rattle started 1 week after delivery ( once every few weeks to start with )
Despite many visits to the dealer, they only heard the noise for the first time when they had the car in Feb this year, so they changed the Timing Chain, Tensioners etc.

Car was fine for a couple of months, but the rattle is back although very occasionally

My car has been to the dealer approximately 15 times in 2 and half years for this and other faults, my warranty is due to expire in December this year and I am not prepared to take the risk of having to pay for highly probable future problems, so have placed an order for a new car ( from another dealer as the service department at my present dealer have been next to useless )

Dissappointed to be leaving MINI, this was my second, the 1st Gen was fantastic, but the overall experience of owning an R56 has stopped me from buying what would have been my next purchase - a Factory JCW

Take delivery of my new Z4 on 1st Sept

What a shame Rocky, sorry that your MINI adventure has ended so badly. Before it goes, try to get something out of MINI for all your inconvenience, several of us have managed. It in no way compensates you for the miserable times you've had but maybe something towards your new motor could be arranged as they are basically the same company.

mines back from dealer now, its a Oct 2008 and has had the full fix, top sprocket bottom sprocket new chain etc., so far seems a lot quieter.

Update: So far after 3 months with the "full monty" tensioner/chain/guides/ rails/sprocket replacement, the '07 MCS starts and purrs like a Honda every time. Our regional MINI dealer says they've had no "comebacks" so far with the latest repair bulletin.

I too had my R56 S from new in Dec '06, and have parted company with her this week, traded in for an Audi A3 2.0T. It was a bit as despite the problems, I enjoyed the car immensely. The Audi has similar performance, but is much more refined. I may well return to MINI sometime in the future, but I will be more wary if I do, particularly if the model is accompanied with a new engine type!

sorry to say my noise has returned after second modified tensioner fitted mid may,again only does it after one or two short cycle starts.I am to see bmw field engineer next week.

I had a new tensioner fitted to my June 07 build MCS in May this year and noticed a big improvement. It had it's 1st Service at 11k miles on 1st July this year and an oil change.....the Dealer used Mobil instead of Castrol and it runs like clockwork

The dealer who supplied my car failed to acknowledge there was a problem with it - occasional diesel car clattering sound on start up lasting a few minutes. I read that this was a fault that Mini had tried unsuccessfully to resolve. I gather a successful fix in the form of a modified chain tensioner has been designed. I took my car for a service last week to another dealer who have arranged to take the car back in next week to fit a new tensioner. This leaves me cheesed off with the dealer I bought from as they fobbed me off when I took mine back in shortly after delivery, when they would have known of the cold start issues.

Anyone out there had this work done since Feb '09 when I gather this fix was released? Can't say I am that happy at there having been a problem with the timing chain for the first 15k miles of the life of the car. Is this a big job and does anyone have a view on whether the timing chain should be replaced too?
