MCS Engine noise when cold

I've just been trying to drive dynamically and only got 10.7 average mpg,
does this count

Think if I didn't see the funny side, I would probably cry....

Returning to the content of the Thumbnails ......strangely I have noticed with my MCS that if it's been parked on the driveway leading to the garage for a few hours, then started and parked immediately inside the garage overnight ....there is a good chance the noise will occur the next morning !

However if it's driven a few miles and then parked overnight in the garage it's OK next morning.

The Type-R was the same if started then parked in the garage overnight, but did not get the MCS 'noise' in the morning......instead the engine would sound and feel rough for about 5 minutes.

The dealer said it was due to the automatic choke coming into operation and the cylinders not having time to burn the fuel, consequently next morning on start up the engine was partly flooded.

This might have something to do with what our German writer is referring to in the thumbnails.

I should have added .......things could have been worse the replacement sun-roof only whistled but did not leak

MJS - Do you know if they swaped your ECU at the same time your engine was changed? The fact that switching off the engine and then back on makes the noise go away for some owners leads me to question if this noise could have something to do with the ECU. If the problem is somehow in the ECU and they didn't change that when they changed the engine, that could account for the noise recurring so soon.

No, none of the electrics or ancillaries were replaced.

I'm not sure how the ECU could affect it, but I see where you are coming from and the question you have raised.

It still seems odd how they have gone to the extent of replacing the full engine, especially after the dealer bulletin from p45 reminding them to reassure the customer that no damage will or has taken place. It just doesn't add up....

If the existing ECU was wrongly programmed for the NEW engine, then it's just a matter of upgrading the program by a flash download......no need for it to be replaced unless it was faulty.

Honestly don't think it's anything to do with the ECU or any other programming issues.

The problem is down to oil supply as per dealer bulletin on page 35 (again...)

I think you are right MJS even the dealers are quoting it as such. Can't see why they would do that unless the problem was worse and they were trying to dumb it down!
But then what could be worse and not yet heard about?

This issue to me sounds serious enough though, I think they are just playing for time for a fix and possibly adding it as a face lift, (maybe next year)? just as they did with various recorded issues on the previous generation.
That means they will service the people experiencing the problem, But only if they complain enough! (No more Sitting On the fence peeps!)

I am wondering how many people overall are suffering with this problem and if there is any way to survey and work out an accurate percentage. Is there anyone here able to do this survey?

True enough Bluebabe, if we remember back to the early One/Cooper gearbox issues, they must have been serious enough as they changed the gearbox design in the facelift....

I would agree they are probably playing it down until the possible facelift models as well.

Can a moderator put a poll up? Maybe we should have
1. No noise at all (fingers crossed)
2. Heard the noise but will live with it
3. Heard the noise and trying to get it fixed

Is there any way to put maybe another poll up, if people have the noise
1. Build date
2. Mileage
3. Date first heard the noise

This should give us some results we can work with then...

Excellent suggestion..........I fully endorse it. By working together is the only method to get BMW
to take notice and hopefully resolve the issue.

What is needed is a new topic with the poll regarding to whether you get the noise, and everyone who votes puts the info within the thread (rather than making another poll) regarding the build date, mileage, and date first heard the noise etc.

Maybe a mod could possibly sticky the thread so it gets looked at all the time and all S owners can post their info.
