Welcome.

Re. diesel engine sound - it's not pleasant, but I have accepted this noise being present during cold start ups- it does go when the car has warmed up. I accept it sounds tapperty and rough, and put it down to the lack of oil circulating at the beginning.

Hissing - that is normal, just the turbo cooling off/engine doing its stuff to cool off too.

Wait till it's run in, as was the case with my car, the car goes even faster after the engine has loosened up. Enjoy

Hi all

I'm experiencing the diesel noise but also like a couple of you it only happens now and again but when it does it makes you wince, it's meant to be cold this weekend I'm dreading it, we've just picked up our second R56 MCS and so far sounds sweet , we'll just have to monitor that one. I'm also experiencing the 'growl' at low revs which only seems to happen when again the car is cold. And the gearbox/clutch squeal when you come down from 3rd to 2nd but it only does it if you have about 3500 revs, the car's got 2k on the clock now so again I'm just gonna have to monitor it and see if it gets worse,it's got a couple of faults with the A pillar trim and a rattle from the sunroof when on tilt so they're going to have to have a look at that too.
Problem is I love the car so hope it can all get rectified, just looked out the window at it and it looks wicked (sad I know) just hope I don't end up hating it

Same (in bold) here Den W. Especially the last bit.

And the rolls of rubber on the edge of the tyres from last mights fun.

And the sound.

And the torque.

I won't hate it. It can be fixed or I'll get another

Hi everybody,
Even though this is my fist post, I have followes CBCooper's engine noise thread for a couple of weeks. My car, a last week of January MCS 2007, makes the same noise as CBCooper's blue MCS. I wasn't sure if there was a problem as some people argue that its a normal noise. However, after lsitening to CB's red MCS, I am pretty sure mine has the same problem as the blue one. However, my MCS has been in the dealer for one week (since 4/16/07). They still don'y know what the problem might be, and MINIUSA has advised them to remove the transmission and see if the noise ends there. Seems a little odd to me, because I thought, uenductated guess, the problem was lack of lubrication of the valves. It has been very frustrating, as nobody has a clue of what it might be. Please keep us posted as to what is the outcome of the repairs. Saludos y suerte.

Well Mine "sometimes" makes the noise (sounds like a bag of spanas) under the bonnet, I say sometimes, and it was mainly when the weather was cooler in the mornings, I also noticed that the days when it was really loud I would reverse of the drive select 1st pull off and then the car would struggle (nearly stall) for a moment, but after a short while it would sort itself out!!! anybody else????

I'm not overly concerned about the problem, as it doesn't appear to have had any other effect on anything YET!

But I'm interested to see what happens next in this thread & see if it is something to be concerned about!!

Dave,

I've heard a 60 year old London double decker bus sounding better. That's just no right that sound.

My dealers top mini technician has spent nearly two weeks on the car and is apparently pulling his hair out with frustration at not being able to find the problem (imagine my frustration as i bought the bloody thing!) As per the norm, they have contacted BMW for advice and they suggested the V pully poly belt? And to be fair my dealers admitted that it certainly is not that! Its definately more a mechanical issue inside the engine, but they have to try it....
The area service manager is (in the area!) and he is going to have a look at my car tomorrow, what some guy who has never seen my car will know more than the guys who have spent two weeks working on is another question, but hey, i await his verdict with baited breath.
Shall we take bets on there return phone call containing the word "characteristic" ?

Hi cBCooper that is what they will likely say but this is very unlike the experience with BMW 4 year old car cracked inlet manifold and £650 bill 1 year out of Waranty and after to the point email saying part should have lasted life of car they repaid 80% of my bill two day's later i see Mini has not got to this stage yet good luck getting this sorted out

Thanks for posting the vid of the other car as well.

The blue one does seem to have quite the knock. I assume that the "area service manager" is a factory rep, rather than a dealer tech. In that case the issue is one of authority rather than competence. If the dealer makes a repair under warranty, the factory may refuse to reimburse; which is why they get the reps involved before starting work on the expensive bits.

Hope all works out for you.

I get the rattle on cold days for about 20-30 seconds, then it goes away...

I posted this in another thread... but I figured I'd put it here, too... since this seems to be the primary thread discussing the cold weather rattle (hop that's OK):

OK, after looking into this a bit and discussing it extensively with a pair of Bimmer mechanics... I believe I have the low down on the cam chain tensioner (or at least a very plausible explanation for the noise many are hearing):

The MINI tensioner (like many vehicles out there) is an automatic unit that depends on oil pressure to push the chain guide against the cam chain, so the chain remains properly tensioned (and therefore quiet).

When you first start your car, there is no oil pressure in the circuit. The cam chain is spinning with no tension and you hear some knocks and rattles from the chain. As oil pressure builds up, so does the tension on the cam chain... and the rattles therefore disappear (and you’re left with normal Direct Fuel Injection "ticking").

When its cold out, oils does not heat up or reach operational viscosity as quickly (it's cold and thick vs. warm, thin and slippery). The knocks from the cam chain upon start up will be more common and last longer under these conditions (as it takes longer for oil to warm up and pressure to build in the circuit).

If you have a car where the cam chain rattles and the knocks don't go away... you probably have a faulty tensioner and should have it checked out immediately. If the rattles go away as the car warms up... probably normal (hey, there were BMW mechanics, NOT MINI mechanics... but nobody's perfect ).

Then again, don't trust my word (this is the internet - land of disinformation), if it concerns you should bring it up to your dealer.
