Car was in at Dealers yesterday (for reference, it's a R56 S; 3 months old; 1500 miles on clock)...
Not main purpose of visit, but I had asked them to look at the twin tailpipes on my R56 S because they were well off-centre (in relation to the cut-out on the rear bumper valance). I thought it would be a quick fix/adjust for them... BUT, I got a call back in afternoon to say that all is ok with exhaust mountings, etc., but that it's the pipes as they produde from the backbox that are incorrectly placed/welded - hence the mis-alignment of pipes out of rear of car. However, more worringly, they also said that there is a HOLE in the exhaust at the backbox. Had a look myself when collected car, and the only tell tale sign of the hole is a small spray/blow line of soot coming out of area where tailpipe is welded onto backbox. It's not a large hole, but is obviously down to poor quality of original welding! ...Car is now booked in for early July to have a new backbox/tailpipes fitted!
Hi , there is provision for adjustment to move the complete silencer c/w tailpipes left/right. The amount of adjustment available on ours was 'just' enough to centralise it. Yes mine was 5-10mm off centre when delivered too. Adjustment takes 5 minutes max, you dont even need to jack the car.
Best Regards Roland GTT
I have a thread in R56 mcs section showing mine out of line and after i sorted it raised it a good bit have a look at how it should be when collect car, very poor
Guessed it would be a quick fix to centre tailpipes, that's why I had asked for it to be done as an aside to main reason car was in yesterday. But surprised and disappointed when got call about the hole! Hopefully new one will be fixed correctly straight off by Dealer?
Hmmm........I have a Feb delivery Cooper, and of late, noticed the exhaust sounds rough when accelerating in 2nd and third gear....................and wondered if it was holed. A wee poke about tomorrow is on the cards methinks
Got the new exhaust backbox / tailpipes fitted last week. All ok, and the new ones are aligned centre/straight ok. Haven't noticed any difference in noise (hole was very small)... Remember, the tell-tale sign (on mine) is/was a small blow-line of black soot emanating from the welding joins (pipes out of backbox).
