Rough Idle Speed

Can anyone help? my engine when at idle speed is really rough, it revs away to itself, and you can actually feel it shaking!!!! almost as though its goin to stall!!

This only happens when the engine is warm, and I have had it back to dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with it!!

Fooj, the obvious questions are, when did it start doing this ? is it the fuel your using ?
does it need a service ? is your air conditioning on ?

it sounds as if the engine is "hunting" ie it's not happy to tick over smoothly when warm due to most likely a fuel problem or some electrical load causing it to hunt.

could even just be a dodgy spark plug, but I thought the dealer would pick this up with test equipment, then again maybe not.

also take a good look at your engine oil level and if the oil in the car is the correct grade as this can cause your described symptions and if un-treated is normally fatal to the engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get dealer to check air-mass sensor - could be faulty and cause your symptons - cannot get the air/fuel mix correct ...worth checking

Hello thanks for all your quick replys.

The car only has 4000 miles on it, and im just using normal BP petrol, 95 octane (i think).

The dealer said there was nothing wrong with it, and its never had any oil put it since it got it, and its sittin about midway! so i cant see that being a problem.

The problem disappears with the aircon, with pulls the idle speed up, so its like the idle speed is just too low.

Think am gonna have another go at the dealership, but as per usual they want the car the whole day, and wont give me a courtesy car coz am not 21!!!!!!!!!!

Put some 98 Ron or higher petrol in, and see if that solves the problem!

That's an injector program issue then. Remember that these things run extremely lean at low rev.
There's one report of a couple that was motoring and their car stalled while on the highway. They were lucky to realize it and restart the car before things became critical.

Safety fast,
Bill

Is it a facelift MCS between july 04 and March 05? I have similar problems but seems to quite common on the facelifts with the old ECUs. I've always had it....but after resetting the ECU it got so much better and only happens very rarely.
