Angry Fire! Fire! Fire!

ok well the title says it all! after me taking my car back to complain of a burning smell and being told its all OK my 07cooperD catches fire so i put it out by the side of the road and the fire service arrive to make sure all is ok. now on closer inspection i THINK and only think its just the floor under the engen and maybe a pipe is damaged. so mini has got it now and im waiting for a phone call to tell me what has caused it and what damage there is. now i told the manager if what has caused it is the same thing i brought it in for and they said was ok there is going to be TROUBLE! so while i wait im wondering what to do? do i make a complaint? do i take legal action? just let me point out what i think is the cause. the fan comes on after a very short drive on my way to work(at 3am) when its cole outside and stays on for a while after i turn the engen off and this is every now and again so i thought some wire of pipe might be getting hot. anyhows ALL your comments on what i should do will be a BIG help THANKS ALL ps i will keep updating if i need to.

First of all if you only had a burning smell then of course a smell can go away or the smell is just a smell and not anything visual. Just imagine your a mechanic and someone brings a car to you and says theres a burning smell if there is no visual signs then that will make it harder to see what it is.

If the dealer checked it and everything might of been fine as nothing may have been scorched or burnt etc etc under the bonnet from excessive heat so they will of said its okay.

I really think your best bet is to wait and see what the problem is and i imagine it will be covered under warrenty anyway as its an 07 plate.

Luckily the full lot didnt go up....

Claim on your Insurance, advise Insurance company that you took it to the garage before to have this checked and they gave it the all clear.

Your Insurers will pursue the garage if they think it is worthwhile (i.e. they can be proven to have been negligent when they inspected it)

Edit: Only claim on your Insurance if the garage doesn't offer to fix it under warranty

I think you should make your decision once MINI have done their investigation in to what caused the fire.
Agreed it shouldn't come off your insurance and should be fixed or the whole car replaced by MINI.

wait to see what mini say about whats gone on as if its a fault with the car then they should fix the problem or replace the car.

Id be very suprised if they dont do that.

Its not worth claiming on the insurance for something that is not a required claim.

I'd say take no action until MINI come back to you. Insurance involvement is not necessary at all as it will only affect your premium later down the line no matter the outcome.

Come back to us with what they say. No matter what it should be sorted under warranty especially as the car was found to have nothing wrong with it before. How long after it was inspected did the fire happen?

It was acceptable in the 80's

I have made the exact same complaint about our CooperD

The fan comes on on cool days, whith no stationary traffic!!.....it has a mind of its own, wil not come on when you expect it to!....seems to come on when not necessary!

....Anyway one day after being only a couple of weeks old, the fan can on and stayed on most of the day, in fact when my wife came home from work in it I had heard it running and asked if she had been sitting in traffic, she told me she hadn't. I took the car out later that evening, it was still on, drove it for about five mile to my inlaws, when I stopped it was still on and by this time I could smell burning - like electrical burning, either the fan motor was overheating or the cables suppling it were! - ( I work as a maintenance engineer and I know the smell of electrics burning)

When I phoned the dealers, they assured me it was nothing to get concerned about, and that the fans do run longer on the new R56's..........(didn't explain why it smell't of burning)
I was told to drive the car ! OK so what if it goes on fire!!

TBH wouldnt bother me!...the way I feel about the car at the minute it could burn to a shell!!!
Spent 45 mins on the phone to the dealer yesterday evening expressing my dis-satisfaction about the car from niggley wee faults to cheap cost cutting production finishes and methods.

Really seem to have lost heart in the wee car!
