BMW acknowledge rattle is number 1 new mini problem

I've posted before about the persistent dashboard rattles that I have had, but I thought for this that I'd start a new thread.

My MK2 57 plate mini cooper has been into the dealer 7 or 8 times now for dash rattles. The worst one they have fixed but they caused another one in the process. My car was due to be taken in again today but I got a call.

The dealer had said that they had to cancel the check as they had a letter from high up at BMW. He advised me that an area manager for the repairs would need to come in as the highest complaint of any new BMW mini owner is dashboard rattles and that they are now taking the seriously.

Has anyone else been advised of this? I am in the east of Scotland area. I urge you, that if you have a rattle then take your car in as this is now the biggest problem with the MK2 BMW. I was even advised that they may issue a recall although I think that to be a bit extreme and highly improbable.

Hi KenL,

I got it from Grassicks in Perth. You can take your mini to any dealer so if you have them same problem then give them a call and take it in. Mine won't be going in for around 4 weeks but I will update this.

I also have the cold rattle problem and was told it was a heater starting up that warms up your engine. I take it this is not true? Can anyone maybe give me some advice on this and what I should do?

Ferengo.

Yeah it's true. They are investigating dashboard rattles on cars from August 07, but they should only be sending an engineer to inspect cars that haven't already had work carried out on them to resolve the issues. You've done well if they're booking one to see your car if it's been in 8 times already.

My intermittent rattle is in the lighting cluster in the ceiling. My Cooper D is very quiet otherwise!

Mine rattles from behind the dash storage compartment. Sometimes I just think I'll drill a 6mm hole and spray in a can full of expanding foam

That is where mine sounds like it is coming from - I don't have the storage compartment though.

OUrs used to creak / rattle as the heater system warmed up - reckon it was the vent pipes!

cured now, but instead we have got an intermittent rattle from behind storage compartment too!
