High Pitch whining noise

Does anyones Mini make a strange high pitch whining noise after switching off the engine?.
If I lift the bonnet the noise is coming from the area of the turbo/ EGR valve and continues for about a minute.

Sounds an awful lot like the it is the cooling fan to me - in which case nothing to worry about

The whining noise after switch off could be from the electric water pump that cools the Turbo, this is quite normal. If it's very noisy then let the Dealer have a look. Mine runs for about 5-10 minutes after turning off the engine dependent on how hot the turbo is.

It mentions this in my user manual (and will probably be in yours) - says it's perfectly normal

My Cooper D has a high pitched noise when switched off as well. Was going to ask this question but you beat me to it

It does turn off after a while, but I noticed mine came back on again when I was cleaning it the other day? Is that normal?

If you read my earlier post on this topic, I said it was the Turbo cooler pump running as it was a Cooper S. I don't think the Cooper D has a Turbo

The only cause I can think of is it's the Electric Radiator Cooling Fan, but cannot understand why it would run if you only moved the car to clean it unless the car had been driven for a while before you cleaned it

The Cooper D does have a Turbo

The car had been for a run before coming home to clean it. At first the noise was there, then as I was cleaning the front alloy I heard it go off. I came back round to polish the front alloy about 10 minutes later and the noise was going again?

My apologies to owners of Cooper D's did not know they had Turbo's

In that case it's the Turbo cooler running, the fact that it came on again later is due to the thermostat sensing an increase in temperature due to the principal that 'hot water rises'. So you have nothing to worry about because all is functioning OK

I don't think it's the turbo, it sounds more electrical to me.

Any ONE/Cooper (non-turbo) owners heard it?

I have had something similar in my cooper but didnt pay much attention to it, it didnt go on for as long as a minute though. I thought it was either the ignition of fuel pump...

It's definately an electrical noise of some discription, it doesn't sound like a pump running, more like a gaint mosquito.
I'm not worried about it, just curious to know what it is and I can't be bothered to go to the Dealers

Doesn't sound like a pump, my Clubman D makes a sound like high pitched electrical whistle.

Sounds like it is at the rear of engine area.
