Thanks for the update. I'm sure the dealer gets suitably compensated by BMW for sorting out warranty issues, judging by the hoops they've made my dealer jump through to sort out my various issues, but I'm also convinced that BMW have a system that encourages dealers to spend as little time on warranty issues as possible.

I was expecting to pick my own car up from its third visit for its various warranty repairs (including the roof problem) today as it's been in since Monday, but my dealer has also decided to keep it in over the weekend to be certain that the repairs have been effective. It's the first time they've done that, but I'm a bit disappointed as I don't even have a courtesy car. Oh well, maybe it's a good sign they need it a bit longer.

Still no info on the detail of the repairs, but I have asked for a full report for when I collect the car early next week. This won't give me much time to test it though - my car will be 6 months old this coming Thursday. I guess I can probably say goodbye to my full refund - not that I really want it, I just want a car that works reliably, but part of me is wondering, "Once a lemon, always a lemon?"

One thing is absolutely certain - I won't be keeping the car past the expiration of its warranty!

Car back on the road

Finally collected my car today. Solution to the convertible roof closing problem (they say) has been to replace the sunroof motor, which I find hard to understand, as this part of the roof always worked faultlessly. Would the sunroof motor's poor health put a strain on the rest of the roof's operation?

Anyway, with today's glorious weather, I was able to give the roof a work out. It worked fine going down, and more importantly, going back up. Even the driver's window behaved properly. Fingers crossed that it's a permanent fix this time.

Fixed?? maybe?????? fingers crossed

Well after 3 weeks the dealer has eventually "fixed" the roof however I was unable to pick the car back up today due to work commitments. Anyway I made a call to BMW customer services and very politely explained the situation, stress etc at first they said no on compensation however after they spoke to the dealer they came back with an offer of a £300 credit note to spend at the dealer (50/50 dealer and BMW funded), hand snatched off most gracefully.

Well lets hope it works tomorrow, fingers crossed will update accordingly. happy roof down Mr faster and hopefully confident roof rising too??

United-Kingdom Sorted....fingers crossed

Well after 3 weeks picked up the car yesterday gave it a thrashing home with the roof down for 40 minutes, left the roof down until I went out an hour later left it down for another hour and a half, came home (these were the conditions in which it failed, then to my surprise and delight the roof worked wonderfully, carried out the same test today and all is still well.

I made sure I spoke to both the service manager and the workshop foreman before I left and got a full rundown on the work that had been carried out plus viewed all the paperwork (a good half inch wad!!) that had been raised as part of the investigative work. this all put my mind to rest that a thorough investigation had been carried out.

In addition I am the proud owner of an E-mail from the dealer confirming a £300 credit note for compensation (not time based), this is 50/50 between dealer and BMW RESULT!!! well that will pay for the first set of front tyres for the car about this time next year.

So alls well that ends well, maybe it does pay to stay with a dealer as several times over the past couple of days I have been told "your a good customer" and "how many cars have you had off us" even the garage foreman commented on our previous MINI convertable. So full marks to Lloyd Motors Cockermouth, Cumbria.

Fingers crossed, lets see what happens

Lets hope this is my last post on this thread

Just an update on my ongoing convertible roof issues.

Since the replacement of the sunroof motor, the roof has gone down and up without problems. However, in early September 2010, I was driving along, and a screw fell out of the driver's side edge of the sunroof motor housing. Later, the whole right side of the plastic shroud that surrounds the sunroof motor came loose and hung down.

Presumably a faulty repair when the motor was replaced, so I took it in to the dealer and they said that they had found where the screw had come from and refixed the plastic motor housing.

Some months later, this is now what happens when I lower the roof...

Give me strength, I've really had it with this car's endless faults. If I could afford to do so, I would be so tempted to get rid of it even though it's only 18 months old.

I never had any problems with my R52 top, altho I've been having problems with my R57 Hardtop, looking at trading it in and really wanna get back into the convertible but after reading this I'm thinking maybe go back to the R52....but it's a fair bit older.... Hmmm Why don't these companies make things like they used to? Built to last!

If the world didn't suck we'd all fall off!
