3yrs old and needs new cat!

During the last few weeks there has been a jolt when accelerating, the acceleration used to be linear and smooth. This happens between 2,000 and 2,500 revs, in all gears and without the traction control activating. I have tried turning the air con off and Redex Fuel System Cleaner but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Any idea what would cause the engine to loose power in this very specific rev range?

How smooth is your engine?

(1.6 petrol cooper 2007 reg, 50,000 miles, 9,000 miles until next service)

Update:
Took my car into Cotswold Mini today. They were very friendly, took the car out for a drive and then plugged it into the fault diagnostic machine and told me that the catalytic converter was “breaking down” and quoted £542.65 to replacing it! They acknowledged that it was only 4 months out of warranty and offered to contact BMW for me. A couple of hours later I got a phone call and they agreed to reduce this to £230 as a gesture of good will. It is booked in for the week after next – let’s hope this fixes it.
