MCS R56 Auto - Brake pedal click when in park - MINI Cooper Forum

Hi guys,

My wife and I both noticed this week on separate occasions that when the car is in park ('P') and you depress the brake pedal that there is a clicking noise (one click per press of the pedal) in the central console under the area where the gear shifter/handbrake sit.

It is exactly the same issue as described in this thread , but unfortunately that user did not come back with conclusions

The consensus from the Internets seems to be that it is a shift lock solenoid that moves out of the way so that you can engage the gears ('R', 'N' and 'D') and is present in all automatics. If that is the case, why did it not make a noise for the first 4,500km??!!

And please don't say that I probably just didnt notice it before, as my wife and I both happening to notice it in the same week, without having mentioned it to each other first is conclusive to me that it wasn't there before

. Could a rubber gromet have fallen off that was previously keeping it quiet or is it something more sinister?

Help appreciated.

Damn, that would seem to suggest it's a problem rather than standard "wearing in"

It isn't a problem. You are hearing the lock mechanism of the gear lever. It unlocks when you depress the brake, so you can move out of Park.
Mine does a small sound too. Probably you didn't hear it because it was better lubricated with grease....

Hmmm, one week it wasn't there and the next it appears quite loud, so it wasn't a gradual shift towards a noisy clicking, it was just not there and then became fully apparent, which seems more like something fell off than grease wearing thin.

Going to the dealer on saturday to get a mirror fixed so will ask then.
