United-Kingdom Poor Headlights

Is it just mine or are the standard headlights on the Mini a bit crap?

Now that it is getting dark in the mornings and evenings I am using my headlights more than I have previously in this car. It's OK when I am driving on lit roads but when I am on dark lanes I am finding it a bit scary that the road does not seem to be very well lit, not too bad on full beam but on dipped, I dont think it would light up a pedestrian or cyclist that far in front.

I never really noticed it till this week when I drove my daughters (my old) 58 plate Corsa and I really noticed the difference, she just has the bog standard lights as well, nothing fancy.

Is it worth a trip to the dealers or am I wasting my time (and probably money) and the fact is that the lights are just pants?

Thanks

Uprate the bulbs if they are just the standard halogen ones, Halfords or wahtever do some higher power ones that are a straight swop.

Xenons HID are what you need really but thats a bit expensive to do.

Yep, the regular halogen lights are crap.

That's the price we all pay for the (probably a majority) Mini buyers who care much more about the styling of the headlights than if they work. Halogen H4s are quite enough to make good headlights, but not if the stylists say that there must be a clear, not lensed, 'glass' over the front.

I found the Osram Nightbreakers that NewMiniStuff and others sell to be a noticeable improvement over the standard bulbs - though sadly the biggest improvement was in main beam, when it's the poor dipped beam that I found the big problem. Which? magazine did a test and found the Bosch upgrade bulbs (Pure Light, something like that?) to have the best dipped beam but I found them a disappointment.

I've just changed to a xenon-equipped car and they are good, though not great - they have a very sloppy beam pattern that just sorta throws light around rather than aiming it accurately.
