Scary dashboard symbol

Hello -

First post, and I've looked around to try and ensure I'm not reposting a much answered issue, but apologies if I have.

I've recently bought a used Cooper S, 07, and am very happy.

However, there is one issue.

When I turn on the car, a red light that I believe is the vehicle electronics warning comes on - (Centre rev counter, looks like a red car raised up on a platform).

I've looked it up and have read that either my car is about to die, it needs checking asap, or it's absolutely fine. It turns off after a few seconds.

It's due a service, which I'm sorting today, but I'm assuming it doesn't have much to do with that. Can anyone shed any light?

To clarify - it's on the counter above the steering wheel. As I start the car, it comes on for a few seconds, a red car raised up on a platform.

Thank you, and again, apologies if I'm rehashing an old issue.

I believe the symbol means the car is overdue a service or break fluid change. If it was a fault the light would usually stay on. I am sure someone else will either confirm or correct me if I am wrong. When you have your car serviced make sure they reset the service lights once they have properly completed all service tasks required.

Welcome to the forum.

That would certainly be preferable to the imminent car-death option. Thanks. Hopefully someone will confirm!

Amber warning is service is coming due. Red means it's time. If you are taking it in they will reset once the service is performed.

Again - that sounds much less alarming than what I'd read. It's booked in for Thursday.

Thanks.

Yeah, it's when you get the little car symbol with the god figure throwing a thunderbolt at it that you want to start worrying.
