09 JCW exhaust popping has stopped

Hi guys,

I've searched the threads but can't find anybody else who has reported this issue... apologies if they have.

The popping that you get from the exhaust on the overun appears to have stopped completely. Not even the slight burble you get.

The car is a 2009 John Cooper Works hatch with 44K. I do mainly motorway miles and a little on some country lanes.

I understand how it works, with the unburnt fuel hitting the hot exhaust causing an explosion.

I did wonder whether the cold weather could be having an affect, but surely the exhaust would still get hot enough to cause the popping?

Aside from liking the noise , of course its part of the character of the car, I'm worries there might be something else afoot.

Has anybody else had this issue? Should I be worried?

Things I've also noticed... that might just be because I'm worrying, but it seems to take longer than normal to warm up (only way you can tell is with the heater).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
James

Hi

Have you recently had the car into Mini, as I have heard that sometimes they update the ECU and this wipes the cars ability to do this as it is a programmed effect from what I am lead to believe.........

Mine is a 2008 FJCW and it does it on overun when the sport button is in, but nothing when not in sports mode.

Cheers

Has it been into bmw for some servicing or repair recently?
some people have had it taken away by a software update
if this is the case you should complain to MINI, demand they put it back to how it was or pay for a remap
you can quote various sources from the internet that it is not just a characteristic of the car but was a design feature, taking it away is almost like them replacing the bonnet with one without a vent without your permission

Thanks for the reply guys.

I had read this myself elsewhere, perhaps I should have explained. No it hasn't been in to Mini or BMW. Not due for a service until September/5k miles.

I wouldn't be pleased if they took that away without my permission though I agree.

Still baffled as to why it would stop...
