I'm about to buy a new mini. I'm considering the cooper and the cooper s. Are there many known technical problems on these cars? Is the cooper s worst than the cooper from this point of view?
I don't want to repest the experience I'm having with my current mini cooper 03.
Currently have a 2011 Mini Countryman Cooper S All4 (Manual), Clutch burnt out after 32K, not through abuse or misuse. Common fault and Mini wont cover under warranty as its a clutch, got a repair bill for £2000, guess they don't and wont cover everything! Even on £32,000 worth of car.
If you want the chance of a life of misery buy either, then spin a coin if its going to cost you a fortune or be a good one. Alternatively get a Jap car & your a lot more certain of hastle free driving.
A bit of advice though if you do buy a mini, ignore the recommended oil change interval and change it at the 1/2 way point.

Yep, 2nd that. I'm doing an oil and filter change this weekend. Oil looks dark but not black. Indicator shows another 8,000 till service. I believe the turbo is fed by the oil in the sump and on that basis I've decided to jump early.
generally naturally aspirated engines are more reliable. seems more are having carbon issues with DI turbo'd engines of all brands as well as bigger lo revving engines. i own older vehicles at the moment, and as much as i love minis, especially with all4, no FWD's for me, i do not feel confident with any newer DI engine. put almost 200,000 on my 01 1.8T jetta, relatively trouble free, modified to almost 300 hp!!
2008 Cooper S. Top end gunked up with tar/oil even though it has been fully serviced.Timing chain tensioner failed bending all 8 exhaust valves and damaging all 4 pistons.New engine required at a cost of 3K plus. Both these issues seem to be a common fault that the manufacturer denys responsibility for.No compensation offered as out of warranty.Maybe if we new there was an issue with the chain tensioner and oil system we would have extended the warranty. If your engine starts to rattle stop immediately as the tensioner is probably starting to go.The new tensioner is a sturdier piece of kit, so obviously a design fault.
Every car has it faults, ones more than others, but i think with a proactive maintenance and at any signs of trouble check it out immediately, your car could last for years and years.
I have an Honda CB1000R with 36k with, and not any problem so far, but i already saw some bikers with bikes less than 10k with problems in the engine and clutch. Just respect the maintenance and the correct usage of the car and it will last for years. Has written above, change the oil early than the recommended.
Going to receive my Mini Cooper S R56 next week, very exited
