Expansion Tank

A friend of mine has just bought a R57 (2008) Mini. He was concerned when he lifted the bonnet that the Expansion tank cap was a flip type rather than a screw type. Also he noticed that the tank was empty. It was filled up and taken for a short drive and level checked afterwards and all looked ok.

Is it correct to have a flip lid on an expansion tank?

I know early models suffered with tank problems but is there other problems ?

It was the early cooper s with the expansion tank problems as they had the pressure cap on the tank. The other models do have a flip lid, if you follow the pipes from your friends tank to the thermostat housing you will see it has the pressure cap there. Thats if its the same set up as the earlier models I presume it is. The level in his expansion tank shouldn't be low though I should keep an eye on that

R50 Minis had a flip cap as mentioned above, not sure about R57:
You can check parts and diagrams fitted here if you search with VIN number:
