Mysterious Oil Leak :(

I bought a 2007 Mini Cooper S from a main dealer in February and its been causing me problems ever since.
The day I picked it up, the engine warning light came on because the engine was misfiring. Drove it back to the dealer who put it down to a lose wire.
On my way home the same thing happened again. I took it back and they kept it for a week. They adjusted the valve clearance and changed the ignition coils.
A few weeks later I noticed oil leaking from underneath the car. Booked it in for them to check it, they ended up changing the sump gasket and rocker breather seal. This didn't solve the leak even though they kept it for a week.
I took it back again; they said they changed the seal behind the flywheel. They asked to keep it, as this was a major job. A few days later there is oil leaking from the car in the same place.
I don't know what to do. Iíve only had it for a few months and want to burn it to the ground! What can I do?
Where else can the oil be leaking?

It could be the engine breather system is clogged up or a pipe collapsed internally creating excess crankcase pressure, if this happens it will eventually blow oil by any seal, no matter how good it is??

Surely you have some idea where the oil is coming from (back of engine, front, side...)? Is the oil filter cap on tight?

How much is leaking - are we talking a few drops or more? Suggest putting some cardboard down under the car to try to see where it's trickling down from.

I get a drop or two after i have parked it. It gathers at the lowest point of the transmission and leaks.

Hi ya

I get a bad feeling when your garage is saying things like they adjusted the valve clearance.
There a hydraulic adjuster they are not adjustable by hand it is controlled by oil pressure. They ether work of do not.
I think there spinning abit if BS there
Tbh if you feel you are getting messed around make shore you keep a diary when it went in and what for, and all receipts of work carried out if possible.

If you have this it sounds like you have given then plenty of opportunity to fix the problems
You are with in you rights to ask for a refund speak to citizens advice .

I hope it does not come to that.

The few r56's I have work on have not leaked oil they have been pretty dry but they Burt it :-) as they do

Hope you get it sorted they are a great car and good fun

What marque says regarding the valve clearances, they are hydraulic so zero maintenance and only cause problems if the wrong oil is used or at very high miles.

Youre female I assume? the garage will spin a few yarns if they think you havent a clue and that gives them excuses to bump up the costs or take their time having you believe they are working hard on it, when its probably in the park car and theyre having lots of tea breaks?

Have you asked/contacted the previous owner to see if they were having problems youre having?

I am only too happy to give the next owner information about the car if they contact me, and in one case a few years back thats when they found out the car had 10000 miles less on it than when I disposed of it.

Yes MINI's have hydraulic valve adjusters so cannot be adjusted manually. You may have been told this by an idiot service advisor - a common problem is that they don't know anything about cars so cannot describe the work carried out.
BMW's protocol for diagnosing oil leaks is to clean off the engine first, then run it for a few minutes to be able to see exactly where the oil is coming from. BMW/MINI use 0w 30 Castrol Edge oil and it is just too thin for the MINI engines (which come from the likes of peugeot). The common oil leaks from MINI engines (not the BMW diesel engine fitted to newer MINIs) are: Sump gasket, diff output shafts, timing chain tensioner. It sounds like you've had a more uncommon oil leak, but the protocol should still have been carried out to correctly diagnose the leak. Sounds like you ran into some incompetent 'technicians'.

2007 mini cooper diesel with chili pack. Hi, looks like i have the same problem. the leak is coming out from the undertray on the left side but doesn't smell like oil. I checked . the oil level with the dipstick and that is near the maximum but is rather dark black in colour. Got it booked into the garage I bought it from tmro so will see what they say. I have a 3 month warranty on it so I went to the main dealer who checked the car over for nothing (surprised I was) and told me that it was a heavy oil leak. So lets see what happens tmro.
