Boot won't open manually

Hi. I have a 58 plate Cooper. It's great, except the boot won't open manually and it takes at least ten presses on the key fob to get it to open. I would appreciate any ideas! Thanks guys!

I know this doesn't help but we have the same trouble on our 08 plate cooper D!

Help anyone, we can't be alone on this one?!

Usually it's water in the boot handle that has fried the micro switch, however the boot release button on the car key usually works in this case.

Ive got this issue on my 08 Cooper for me its a failure in the tailgate handle button. Shame its integral to the handle and its not just the switch that can be replaced

It's repairable but you have to DIY.

Yes previous posters are correct, it is water ingress into the boot release, called a grip strip. It corrodes the micro switch and becomes inoperable. The parts do not come separately, it is an entire grip strip. They are easy to replace yourself, open the boot, pop off the liner then unscrew the four T20 screws that hold the grip strip on. Disconnect the small electrical connector (make sure you don't lose it in the tailgate!) and install the new grip strip in reverse of removal.
