I would expect the aircon to be controlled automatically.
Am I really asking for the moon on a stick?

As you have just described perfectly the operation of Auto Temperature control I think my point about the naming stands...

If you called it auto temp control, what additional functionality would you expect to make it auto a/c?

Does the confusion not come from the fact that people think aircon is there just to make it cold and therefore should only be on when the car is too warm?

But on climate it can use Air con to cool or have it on "Economy" type of mode without the Air con running?

I get what you mean, but that is what aircon does. When i first had a car with aircon I only use to use it when it was hot; use it all year round now, makes the car alot more comfortable.

well, its beginning to look like that is my only solution
The only reason I'm not keen is because of fuel consumption. but I guess I can give it a go and see if its any worse?

Thanks

On my Lexus you hit auto and it switched on the air con unit. To run in "Economy" mode you switched off the air con unit...

...and that sounds same as the mini

I usually run mine all the time unless windows open, removes the moisture from the air..and there is generally a lot of that up here in Scotland In winter it is great at helping demist the car..and alway the worry that if you only use it once in a while that the seals will dry up..collent will leak and then no air con at all !

On my last 2 cars (Lexus RX300SE and BMW330Ci) I never noticed any decrease in mpg with air con running... though they both had 3 litre engines so not great mpg anyway (especially in the RX300).

Just wanted to post a follow to say I've since read the manual :P
and can confirm Auto Air Con not only switches in the AC but also has a sunshine sensor and alters where the cold air goes. So its a fully fledged Climater system really!

Also, the auto recirc setting senses when its getting cold outside or when there is pollution and shuts the valve to prevent condensation and bad odours respectively.

wow

It is a clever system, I still override the Auto facility and just adjust the temp and blower amount manually!
What was previously mentioned about the pollution, how does it know whats pollution and whats not, also should there be a pollen type of filter changed on it?

There's a microfilter that contains charcoal that helps eliminate pollen and road smells. In the service manual it tells you when they should be changed.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Root ginger has it.

You will notice on a cold morning and misty windows clear faster if the AC is on even if your running the blower with temp set to 25.

Same morning with AC off and temp set to 25 it will take longer as the warm air is also moist and so creates some mist on the screen before temp rises to start clearing screen.

AC drys and cools air. If light is green then AC is working (if temp set to hot then the AC is mearly drying the air but not chilling it, but if temp low then its doing both)

You will note on a long AC on journey that you may begin to get dry mouth and prickly skin ...I myself can start to suffer sore eyes and headache as the air in the cabin is getting so dry, especially if you have the system on "recylcle air" button.
