Sat-Nav charger destroys cigarette lighter...

Hi there,
I have a garmin 310 satnav, which if i use the cigarette lighter charger;

a) constantly drops power connection and more frustratingly:
b) blows a fuse in the lighter socket somewhere by using charger, rendering it useless.

anyone had this problem? know of a work-around?
MINI have kindly replaced fuse, but say it'll keep happening as all chargers (mobile/satnav etc) have a tendency to this to cars!
can this be true?

cheers.

Thanks,
live in London, so leaving a charger plugged in is asking for a brick through the window

also, am actually a smoker (hangs head in shame) so would actually like to be able to use the lighter once in awhile.
