I would also swaer by Tom Tom only, although I have not had a chance to have any proper use of a Garmin, I like the concept you can personalise your own MINI, I think a few on here have managed to do this with the Factory Nav as well!

i already have a personalised spalsh screen on my tomtom 7 the option to have a car icon is coming with the next firmware release

depends what you mean by compatible - i have a tomtom go500 & N73 & i can send & receive phone calls. it won't receive texts but then you shouldn't be reading or typing texts on the move anyway - if you can you're not driving hard enough

I already have a NUVI 250, so it'll be interesting to see whether the same fitting kit works and whether they'll install it separately.

in what ways mike? i've never owned anything than my current tomtom so i've nothing to compare in real terms but any reports i've read always give tomtom the edge in terms of user friendliness & functionality

So far, I am heartily UNimpressed...
"Tweaks" in the display are not worth the dealer uptick. I can customize the startup display on my Gamin Nuvi 350 - in fact, my cat is who appears to greet me on startup...
Were it integrated into the sound system, so that it would mute the radio, THAT would be useful, but I see no reason at all to pay extra for the paltry "customized features" I read about here.
I had the OEM unit in my first MINI, and decided that there was just far too much upside to having a portable, so my second has the chrono pack there instead.

I DO like my Nuvi - best thing about it is how perfectly compact it is. That is why I bought it over all the others that I have used and researched (and that's a LOT of 'em!)
it's got plenty wrong with it too, but plenty that is very good.

For an incredibly simple, nearly invisible, no damage to or taking apart of the dash, cost-free installation idea, check my post here:

That's exactly what I do, you can also make sure the wire is tucked under away from feet if you reach behind above where you legs go there's a piece of plastic you can "clip" the wire too.

Very neat.

Just asked the dealer about this. They said it should be available in a couple of months, and adapters will be available to enable other Garmin models to be fitted. So existing Garmin owners (like myself) should be OK.

They also confirmed approx £1500 fitted for the stage 1 Works kit.
