OK - so I bought a new 8gb stick (my 4gb worked but was too small) and now I get the random freezing every, 5 tracks - GRR!

Did anyone get to the bottom of why it froze and how to fix??????

It was a Samsung Micro SD card in a Sandisk card reader.
Weird that it works and then freezes....maybe a power issue?
The USB port provides 500MA's according to the compatability matrix which was posted on here....should be plenty.

Got any other uSD cards you can try in the reader? I'd be suspicious of the reader. Also, are the uSD cards a similar speed to normal SD?
It's a process of elimination really - is it the card? the reader? the combination? file system of the card? make of card? If I had an alternate use for an 8GB card I'd buy a different make to see if it made a difference, maybe buy a different reader.

I'd start by ditching the SD card reader/SD card combo and trying a straight forward usb flash drive.

Our Integral Mini USB Flash Drive has worked without issues for 6 months or so now.

weirdly, I moved over to SD because of the issues with usb memory sticks. Some memory sticks have software loaded on them and are only intended for PC use - such as the 16gb Sandisk stick I bought. absolutely no use in the mini due to the security software it needed to load.

i'm not saying usb sticks wont work but an SD card is more likely to work as they are designed for devices with no operating systems like a camera.

I have a 16GB sandisk USB (cruzer blade 16) no freezing issues - occasional track stops or makes a screeching noise this is an mp3 encoding issue in most cases another source works or delete that track if no other source is available. I Have 450 tracks in the top level and 140 directories (some with sub directories) in total about 2,500 songs.

Once you use playlists etc seems to be very hard to get back to just the top level as someone else noted. At present I have selected TRACK on the selection and this seems to play everything, all single top level tracks and then whole albums but the order seems to be a deep dark mystery, the albums do play in play order but the mixture of tracks and albums who knows!

Hope this helps a bit

It has to be the sandisk with the special U3 software on it - this stops it working like a USB stick and acts more like a hard drive, getting more common nowadays I beleive...

mine was a cruzer micro:
