Starting the car without the key in the ignition

I've seen a thread here before but cant find it now about being able to start the car engine without the key in the ignition, so you can can put the heaters on etc & leave the car running, then locking the car with the key and then going back inside. Much safer than leaving the key in the car. I've done i myself in the past but struggled to remember how over the recent weeks. Can anyone please confirm the process how.

Presume you need to remove the emergency key from the fob and start the car and then lock the car manually from the door. However conventional wisdom is that you should start the engine and warm it by gently driving off, not just sitting there. If you do this on a public road you are technically committing an offence ("quitting").

I would assume you are talking about the comfort assess. I dont have it but from my understanding the car detects the remote within the car and you start the car by pressing the start button as u would with a key fob in the key slot. i would assume that if u take the remote out of the car to lock it, the car would cut out.

And how is it safer that leaving the keys in the ignition? Leaving a running car to warm up is an open invitation to a theif even if the doors are locked.

insert the key, foot on the clutch, push the key in again to release it whilst at exactly the same time press the start button.. the engine will start up and the key isnt in the ignition, might take a few tries to get it to work.

It's even easier than that!

Start the car with the key in as normal.

Stop the engine with the button.

Remove key.

Press clutch and start engine!

You can also lock the car with the fob and the engine remains running!

My bmw e90 did the same thing. I showed the dealership how to do it. They knew nothing about it. You have 10 seconds to restart the car after the key is removed

I'm keen to give this a try.

Is this really for allowing the car to 'heat-up' in winter while you have your Bran Flakes in the heat and comfort of your house?

Hardly environmentally friendly?

I like driving in my car, it's not quiet a Jaguar.
