Canada Clarification on USB connector required for iPhone

Hi, everyone:

I've conducted a few searches on here, but I still find myself wanting some clarification regarding the USB port and the iPhone. I just upgraded to a 2010 Cooper S, which includes the USB (unlike my previous Mini). I have a iPhone 3G (not the 3GS) which I have tried to connect via USB using the stock iPhone cable. When I do so, though, it comes up with "error" on selecting it in the Mini console. (It works fine through the AUX port.)

I have heard mention of a Y-cable that is BMW-issued-- is this the only cable that will work? Is the old iPhone 3G that I'm running even compatible? I'm upgrading at some point soonish to the iPhone 4, which will perhaps alleviate my problems.

Thanks, everyone, and sorry if I missed an obvious post addressing this already!

Cheers,

-zanyt.

I bought the connector lead from my local BMW dealer [about £35] which connects into the USB and audio sockets in the centre console.

When i connect my iphone 3GS it says its not compatible but my ipod is fine with playlists etc shown on the stereo display. I think the 3GS will work if you put it into airplane mode which turns turns the "phone" off [not the complete iphone].
