I wasn't told there was any difference in functionality between the snapin and dashboard USB interface...

The snap-in slots into a universal connector within the armrest (this is an option) so it you buy a new phone you just buy a new snap-in and slot it into the armrest.

**NOTE: there is typically 3 types of snap-in per phone; charging, music, and full media. The current snap-in from BMW/Mini doesn't support video, but the front USB port does.

Is it possible to use an iPhone dock cable if the snap-in doesn't fit the new iPhone, i.e. is the universal connector a USB port where I could plug an iPhone dock cable?

No, the armrest has a BMW/Mini type connector for the snap-in not a USB connector.

... although I have bought a iPod male <> female connector (extension cable) which allows me to connect an iPod classic the the snap-in with the lead coming out of the back plugging into the iPod in the rear cup holder.. not ideal but it works.

Good idea! I guess I'll go ahead and order the snapin then!
I was just afraid I wouldn't be able to connect an iPhone 5...

TBH, I would wait, you can pick up a snap-in off the shelf from BMW so don;t rush into anything.

But to use the snapin, I need the universal connector to be in the armrest, right?
I was assuming that it wouldn't be built-in if I didn't order the snapin...

Thanks for all your help so far!
Nobody was able to give me as many details as you did. ;-)

Sorry I mis-understood - the snap-in itself is small and you can buy at the dealer later. You will need to make sure you order the armrest which you plug the snapin into.. the armrest is a factory fit option I beleive, so you should make sure that is include within your order for the car.

I saw a mini at the dealership that had an armrest but no connector inside so I will assume that ordering the snapin is a way of making sure the connector will be built into the armrest...

I don;t think so as the snap-in is held in stock at the dealer. I would contact your dealer to confirm - inside the armrest there is a larger button towards the front - you press this and the cover will pop off to reveal the connector towards the back of the armrest.

Replacing snap in connector

How do I remove the USB/AUX-IN socket from the compartment?
