Mini Connected/Iphone issues

After my long saga with changing parts on my 2010 Mini Cooper D with media package and Mini Connected to try to get my Iphone 3GS working with Mini Connected with the Iphone installed in the USB Snap In adapter, it appears that until Apple release new software for the Iphone (3GS and 4) then no iphone will work with Mini connected when installed in the USB Snap In adapter. This is the information apparently issued as a recent technical note to BMW/Mini dealers.
The Iphone will however work fine with Mini connected if it is attached to the USB Aux socket underneath the centre console.

As mentioned in another thread - Iphone 4.2 is now out. Installed it on my Iphone 3GS nor problems but Mini Connected still does not work when the Iphone is docked in the USB sanp in adapter nor can you play any music on it. As before connecting the Iphone via the white Apple USB cable to the connection underneath the centre console means it all works fine.

Problem solved - Mini have brought out a new USB Snap In adapter part number 84 212 186 288 which is only for the new 2011 facelifted models with Sat Nat or Visual Boost with Mini Connected and USB Audio/Bluetooth.

Will this part number work with the Countryman?

Yes for an Iphone see RealOEM.com BMW R60 Cooper D 1.6 Music snap-in adapter here. However in your other post on tj888 thread you seemed to be talking about an Ipod. There are no armrest snap-in adapters for Ipods.

I think you have a 57 plate Mini so R56 with I presume USB option plus the 3.5mm Aux socket next to it underneath the centre console. To get your Ipod to work properly with your car electronics you need the BMW Y cable. which splits audio to go via the 3.5mm Aux socket and track info/data via the USB socket. You can purchase this part from your BMW/MINI dealer. It is around £40.

2011 MY does not need the Y cable. A standard iPhone/iPod cable works just fine, for MINI Connected, iPod functions, audio etc.

I just wish you could have a USB connector in the armrest, don't want to have the snap-in adapter as I use an iPhone case. happy just to drop the phone or iPod in the armrest.

MINI Cooper S in Laser Blue our third MINI (with a five year gap since 2005...).

scillyisles, thanks for your input. I have an iPhone 4 and iPod Classic (4th gen I think, quite old). Really what I wanna do is have my iPod plugged in inside the armrest as I tend to keep my iPhone in my jacket pocket when driving and also I don't really have music on it. Will an iPod fit inside a snap-in adapter for iPhone 3G/4?
Simontay, I didn't manage to get MINI Connected to work using the standard iPod cable but I can play music. Also see if you can see videos (when the car's in park) through the standard cable, as far as I know you need to have the Y cable to get video to work (I wasn't able to see video either with standard cable but I could hear the audio). I'm getting a Y cable shortly, got the finance company to throw it in the deal for me.

No

Mini connected works fine on several Iphone 3GS I have tried (I don't have an Iphone 4) with the standard Apple cable provided you connect it to the USB socket underneath the centre console. It can have the occasional hiccup where you need to stop and start Mini Connected on your Iphone. You are correct in that in order to get the video you need to have the latest BMW Y cable (which is different to the Y cable for pre 2011 Minis) This is because the video signal is output via the 3.5mm jack which you insert into the Aux socket underneath the centre console.
If you have the correct Iphone USB snap in connector for the armrest then the video is output ok.
I tend to have my black 160GB classic Ipod underneath the centre console and my Iphone in the centre armrest. This way you have the best of both worlds with lots of music etc on the Ipod and all the Mini Connected features on the Iphone. The new comms system in 2011 Minis allows you to support both the Ipod connected to the centre console and Iphone connected in the armest. If you have a black Ipod then it is not readily seen when placed underneath the centre console.

Thanks again for your advice. A bit disappointed the snap-in adapter won't take an iPod; surely as they have the same connection at the bottom this should be possible?!
I do have a black iPod but my Countryman is mostly beige so the black iPod sticks out, plus I'd like to avoid having a multitude of cables flapping about. Oh well :S

Hi again, just received the iPod cable from dealer but I've got a feeling it's not the right one (as you said there's a specific cable for 2011 MINIs). The part number for the cable I got is 61 12 0 440 812. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct one? I don't want to open the packet if it's not so I can't test it...

Yes looks like you have got the wrong cable - I think the right one is 61122179623 which is the Iphone/Ipod cable for Minis produced from 08/2010 this year. Your dealer can confirm this on the parts system.
