Y cable frustration!

Hi all,
I ve just upgraded my 04 cooper to a very high spec 08 JCWs! Love it to pieces but I have a very fustrating problem and need some help! I have the nav screen and armrest and was told my iphone 4S would only charge in it and it would cost over £200 to get the snap in adaptor at my local mini dealer, he said the Y cables are better if I want playlists album artwork charging etc and mfsw controls to work. It is this functionality I am after, so he said the cable was near £50, so I said id leave it, did some reading on hear and got one off amazon, now I have audio but the USB connection does naff all so no artwork etc... From reading on here doin need to fork out the £50 or so to get the original oem product? Reading something's about a chip or a pin change or something?
Also my iphone won't charge through a longer old lock in apple orginal adaptor in the USB/aux in, going to try my latest cable that came with the phone but should this really make a difference?
Any help would be great! I ve read some very confusing and contradicting posts!

I dont know how they got away with making the iphone only compatible with such a specific cable but it seems that only the MINI OEM Y-cable works consistently. Others from Amazon etc. seem to work sporadically.

I also found this out only after getting my new MCS with Full Bluetooth and Mini Connected that the snap-in was extra and doesnt work properly with iphone 4! and had to fork out £50 for the cable. Another annoyance is that the mini connected iphone app features mostly dont work without the snap-in

EDIT: It seems the Mini connected features do work, I just didnt have them enabled on my 3G

Looks like I am gunna have to bite the bullet and go to mini 2moz and pick one up! I get the newest iphone every year, just hope it doesn't mean loads of cables every year! I haven't got the connected on my modal! Think that was late 09 onwards?
They should make a universal snap in adaptor, but hey that would be common sense and would not make them as much money ;-)

Our OEM Y- cable from the stealers has worked fine with every iPhone and iPod I have connected

I believe that iOS 5 solved the problem of connected features not working through the Y cable. All works well for me using the cable.

just connected my ipod touch 3gen w ios 5.1 n d latest mini connected app installed. cant get d mini connected working. it couldn't find d device under mini connected. it would play in media usb. any idea? is it a faulty cable?
