2 spoke steering wheel replacement.

Hi all.

Ok so i recently purchased a mini cooper r56 which has just the basic plastic 2 spoke wheel. I must admit, im finding this wheel a bit rubbish really. IMO it feels really cheap and brings the car down in looks and feel.

Initially i was looking at conversion to a 3 spoke MFSW however the cost of this seems far to high for my budget. From my understanding i would need new wheel, new airbag, and possibly coding? im havent even bothered to phone up mini dealer about this yet as im sure it will be a good few £100's.

My other option is replace the current 2 spoke, with a new leather 2 spoke. I have seem them on ebay going for about £70. This would definatly be the cheaper option, and im sure the leather wheel would feel like a massive improvement.

Has anyone on here done this in the past, comments, advice please, is it an easy job?

Also is it possible to get a 2 spoke leather wheel from mini directly, or am i limited just to ebay. I will be calling into the garage in a few days, however thought i would ask on here first.

Thanks everyone

I would get a three spoke to be fair. Plenty of used ones on eBay etc. airbag pops off and you then unbolt the wheel.

Relatively straight forward job.

Just had mine swapped today for a jcw wheel. Mine mechanic only charged me 25 quid but he is reasonable and but shouldn't cost much more.

Thanks, That seems really good. Did you need to buy a new airbag? i was under the impression that the two spoke one didnt fit a 3 spoke.

According to the parts list the airbag module for the 2 spoke wheel is pt number 2757663 and for the 3 spoke its 2757665 so its different, same price though.
I would think the difference its where it fits around the bottom spoke cover, maybe a slight relief in the moulding? I bet the workings are the same.
Also if you convert to 3 spoke you will also need the bottom spoke trim cover too.

I didn't think of that. It doesn't fit the 3 spoker but if I was going to the trouble of swapping my wheel I'd go all out and do the 3 spoker. Much better looking wheel IMO
