DSC and LSD question

Just a quick question. If you ordered a car with both the LSD and DSC options, would the two features conflict with eachother? Are they both doing the same job?

They do different jobs and play nicely together.

The LSD shares the available power between the wheels in such a way as to maximise the power to the wheel with the best grip. The DSC manages the throttle opening and applies the brakes to stabilise the vehicle. So they do different jobs and, on a track day for example, you would want the benefits of LSD rather than have the DSC reduce wheel spin by cutting the power or applying the brakes

OK, thanks. That makes sense.

One other question. Does the LSD drain any power from the car through any kind of 'transmission loss' as is the case with some 4WD cars?

Nope, there's no power loss

As a matter of interest my July 07 MCS has LSD + ASC. (Dealer and I forgot to specify DSC).

As a result of having ASC instead of DSC what would be the disadvantages ?

I did the same Ceaser and forgot to order DSC, you get the traction control part which limits throttle during wheelspin, but you miss out on the system that brakes individual wheels to stop you losing control of your car.
I remember reading not so long that the EU were trying to make DSC compulsory on all cars as it was so good at avoiding accidents.

Hi Scone.

I'm not unduly worried at not having DSC, but am annoyed the Dealer did not advise me to get it especially as I said to him " are there any other items I should specify to improve safety and performance" before I sign the order.

Having both LSD and DSC will not cause you any problems, but you can switch off DSC by pressing the button in front of the gear stick. It's ON by default, so if you turn it off and then turn off the ignition and then restart, it will be ON again.

LSD is permanently engaged.

The MCS I used on a test drive did not have LSD, and I noticed a lot of torque steer, the MCS I eventually bought has LSD. As a result I get very few problems with torque steer

Do you not have DSC on your car as well then?

Having had 4 Cooper S, my last one had LSD on it, it was the supercharged one, Would u really need DSC as i dont want to be accerlerating and having the power snatched from me.

Well u can switch it off...DSC that is, and more litely it is the traction control system that comes as standard that controls the amount of power going through wheels. DSC just saves you when you over cook a corner and loose the back end, it then brakes the wheels individually to try and get car to stop spinning.

I have both and think it is great, on track I'll switch DSC off...in the wet winter days I most definitely like having it there.
