R56 MCS -Oil question

Yesterday my June 07 build MCS had it's 1st service. According to the Handbook the correct oil is Castrol Edge 5W-30, I asked the dealer what oil they had put in and they said Mobil. Does anybody know why BMW/Mini have changed brand

Dont think they should have. My garage still uses Castrol in all thier Mini's. Maybe they are using Mobil because its cheaper or something. I would call Costomer Services and ask them what its about because knowing BMW you will be blamed for the wrong oil in the avent of an engine problem.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be castrol. Many manufacturers have more than one oil manufacturer qualify their required spec.

I'm sure my last top up was Mobil 1.

Mine gets it's first service tomorrow..............25k

I drive it hard and it's had the stage 1 kit since new. Glad i dropped the oil at 12k, cause it's looking grim at the moment.

R56 MCS Oil question

I checked the Mobil website and evidently their Longlife is approved by BMW, so there should be no problem....touch wood !!!

Although it is to BMW spec i still think garages are supposed to use Castrol unless told otherwise. I was told this by a guy i talk to alot from my dealership. He said the book says use Castrol so therefore the garage was supposed to. Maybe he was talking crap. Its not like Mobil 1 isn't good. My dad had it come with his Porsche Carrera.

I've been wondering if MINI/BMW have changed the oil supplier because of the MCS Cam Chain Tensioner noise problem. Possibly the Mobil oil improves the supply of oil to the tensioner

You may have a point actually. I haven't asked about oil since the Replacement of my Chain tensioner so may well have changed. Ill ask monday if i get a chance and post details. It may just be that they use both depending on where you are, but i was told it was Castrol that my BMW garage uses at all times.

At the New Mini Day at Manby I spoke to a bloke from Lohen about engine noise from timing chain. He said that they had made a significant improvement just by changing the oil. Unfortunately I cannot remember if it was 0 - 30 Millers or 5- 30 Millers - you would have to ring and find out. He also recommended changing more regularly. Dave, Lincolnshire Mini Club

Hi all,

I pick up my first cooper s on saturday - an 08 plate with 10k on the clock.

It has the tlc pack until mid-2013 but surprise surprise, the obc says no oil change is due for another 7k - which'll be the first one.

That seems crazy to me, what would be two years on the same oil if I waited for that 7k to elapse, but I won't go on about it as I know there have been threads about this already etc. Still, as I plan on keeping the car a while I'd really like to get an oil and filter change done pretty quickly even if that means having to stomach the £100 or so its bound to cost me anywhere I go, let alone Mini as I've already tried getting Mini to do one as part of the "deal" I struck but they said they couldn't (more like wouldn't) as the car didn't need one yet.

So to cut to the chase, a couple of questions: where did anyone go for their first (early) oil change, does it mess up the condition based servicing/obc working out when the next oil change is due, could Mini theoretically invalidate the warranty should something go wrong further down the line and they find out a did an early oil change etc etc.

Any help much appreciated,
thanks,
Tim.

Hi Tim79,

Don't worry ....the oil change sequence is every 20K miles. The onboard Computer will tell you when an oil change is due.

The MCS uses synthetic oil, this requires changing far less often than mineral oil Your Dealer gave you the correct information.

Tim79,

Sorry, I should have said oil changes are every two years, or 20K miles....which ever occurs first. You can of course change it more frequently, but you will have to pay the cost.

I've changed oil on my MCS twice since I bought it two weeks ago and Castrol EDGE Sport 0w-40 is definitly the one that the MCS likes the best
Very nice oil indeed and since I drive a lot in the city and short trips with lots of start and stops I change when the oil has run for more than 7-8000 km. The 0w-40 is also approved by BMW Longlife + it's the one that Castrol themselves recommend for the R53
