United-Kingdom New R56 Cooper S Rattling Dashboard

I have bought this MINI Cooper S Camden, brand new from Oct09. Notice dashboard noise since Day2, then centre dashboard area noises got louder and louder ever since. The car has been back to the dealer twice now, wonder if I should go back to complain further or so. The car has been driving great, but all these rattling noise is driving me crazy at the moment. During the fixing, the dealer has loaned me several BMW, and none of these cars make such horrible rattle, neither of all the old car I used to own. Any suggestion, anyone?

dashboard rattles are very common and like most rattles can be very difficult to fix as they are built in at the factory.

my dashboard noise on my cooper came from the big centre vent area and seemed to be temperature related. ( I just lived with it as I don't have the time to constantly visit the dealer )

have they removed your dash and added extra padding ??

Yea, they took it in and did exactly what you said, dashboard off and added padding. Initally, I can notice the slightly improvement, but soon after the rattling returned. Doesn't the rattling annoy anyone? It certainly destroyed my passion for my MINI

Brute force fixes everything .

My door rattled badly the second day I had mine. One swift hit with my hand and it went away. I am waiting for it to return. Keep bringing it back! Keep a good log and records. If they cant fix it they will eventually just have to replace the car. You could also notify Mini of the issue you are having.

yes rattles are very annoying and it gets to the stage that you are just waiting for the rattle or squeak to start and it spoils your enjoyment of the car.

I also feel that most people will return the car just so many times then get fed up with the hassle and inconvenience and put up with the noises until they change the car.

I paid around 16500 for my cooper and would love a JCW, but I refuse to pay up to 24000 for a brand new car with these built in faults.

Honestly, the car only has done less than 2k at the moment. I do love MINIs, but I just can't seem to fully enjoy driving the one I have got at the moment after paying 25k. I might start taking action on this case.

25K..........this is what really annoys me, you should not get this happening on a 25K car !! and it's all too common, just have a read through the forum.

my Landrover is much much quieter than my cooper and a lot better built.

indeed it is a place of peace and tranquility !!

I am gonna ring BMW today and see what are going to say, I am sick of that sweet talk from the dealer, "don't worry Sir, we'll get it fix for you." Will keep this updated, with progresses and results. Keep the comments coming!!!

The dashboard rattles are my main gripe with the MINI, I just don't see why they can't build them so that this doesnt happen. I've never had it to this extent with other makes I've had in the past, and they've mostly been just mass-market ones. I can just about put up with it on a lower range model, but it seriously puts me off trading up to a Cooper S, which I'd love.

yes I couldn't agree more............I've been driving for nearly 40 years and have owned old minis; numerous fords; triumphs; wolsleys; fiats; opels; vauxhalls; landrovers; toyotas; renaults; ..........and my cooper has been the only one with a very noisy dashboard !!

and they are still knocking them out even although they know it is a widespread problem !!

That's what gets me, they had these sort of problems with the first generation, which they never sorted, and theyve still got them now. It can't be that hard to design these rattles out, can it?

I have no rattles from mine at all- although my Cooper D did rattle.
I must be very fortunate!

Mine too.. rattles sometimes when its REALLY cold (its a petrol) but there's a whole separate thread on this!

The dashboard on mine seems to be ok though... I do live up an unmade road and sometimes get a creak from the rear..and the odd rattle not sure what it is but its not an issue and doesnt always do it and never out on the road...

Car has sat nav so I wonder if cars with this rattle less than ones without it?

Ok so far, cooper s clubbie, 08 plate, 11k miles...

Don't despair, mine had a buzzing, rattley sort of noise from the plastic panel behind the steering wheel. It took 3 visits and an email to MINI Customer Services but it is fixed now.
Whilst you are waiting for it to go in again, try taking a bit of paper out with you to wedge the trim panels, various combinations may just help to identify the faulty area.
