United-Kingdom R56 Idle - Sounding Bad

Hi

I have just purchased a 2007 Cooper S - at idle it sounds like crap!

I took it back to the dealership and they said the early R56 ones do - but this is BMW - surely their engines are of a standard where it doesn't sound like a dogs dinner. The idle revs dips i would say +/- 10 RPM - enough to make you notice the dip, which in turn makes the car rattle a little bit.

This is my list of problems so far:

Interior light bulb doesnt work
Bonnet needs adjusting
Panoramic roof - the seal is broken so air flow can be heard
Squeeky drivers window when opening
Stone chips seem to have been coloured in with a Crayola pen

And to add insult to injury the manual they gave me was for an R53 Convertable!

Apart from that I'm pretty chuffed with the conversion from an R50 One to the 175 bhp R56!

S engine idle

I have a 2008 MCS and your description sounds spot on. I spoke to my dealer and he confirmed that 'they all sound like that on start up'. I do notice the top end rattle goes away once it's warmed up.

Don't forget the engine is a joint BMW Peugeot jobby!

Those damn French, THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT WORD FOR EVERYTHING

Mine like most others makes the same rattle I also took mine to my local BMW dealer and it checked out ok.

The bonnnet should be easy to adjust as there are 2 rubber stops under the hood than can be adjusted, unless there is another problem with the bonnet.

Also get used to squeaks and rattles, its the Mini way

There are about 12 or so fixes for this rattle apparently.

As prev mentioned, check out YouTube to see if your noise is similar.

Don't let the dealer fob you off though!

Agreed. That's why we like it, right? It's not silent car by any chance.

Didn't notice a reply for this post sorry! Problems are all fixed now although the 'death rattle' still goes on. And yes once the engine is warmed up which doesn't take very long at the moment, as the sport button and my right foot are getting quite acquianted

Quick question, I don't think my R56 has an alarm, surely a 18-20K car new has an alarm? I tried shaking the car locked, ive also locked myself in and tried to break the untrasonic sensors by the map reading lights. Slightly concerned!

I've had the "death rattle" fixed about a year ago and now its back with a vengeance, going back to the garage shortly to see if there's a newer fix.
As for the alarm, lock your car, wait 2 mins then bend the aerial. I accidentally did this to mine last week and it set my alarm off. totally crapped myself XD . never heard it before

Only in certain countries. It's not standard here, £260 more. Too bad mine didn't have it when I bought it.
