Hey peeps, owned mini s jcw for 1 week now..192 bhp firebreather ... beauty.
okay so i always learnt that turbos need cooling down before turn engine off...this has stop start and the turbo gets thrashed and then brake for traffic...boom car stops...is this not bad for the turbo??
also...i read to press the left button on the indicator stick to bring up mpg readings...but it just comes up with speed in mph and date/time .... when i get down to red on fuel it tells me how many miles i have left untill i run out so how comes it wont bring up the digital reading othertimes?
I have a 2012 Factory JCW 211 bhp and that does not come with a stop start system unlike all the other versions of the current MINI.
The stop start system is an economy device after all and you dont buy a JCW with economy in mind, at least I didnt.
Sounds like yours is a converted Cooper S as the standard car would have stop start?.
Yes I always thought such a system wouldnt be good for things like turbos glad I havent got it.
Its strange, ive just always wanted something that tells me my mpg but your right it is the standard cooper s with the jcw package on...so it is kinda pokey. and yeah i bought it without worrying about fuel - i just find it is a nice addon telling me what i could get on motorway driving
The turbo is water cooled, when the engine is switched off an electric pump turns on and helps draw heat away from the turbo. Not sure how effective this is, but i have not read of many problems with turbo's so its probably quite effective.
This is correct, the turbo cooling is automatic. In February 2012 There was a Vehicle Safety Recall for Mini Cooper S / John Cooper Works- Hatchback, Clubman, Convertible. Replace the exhaust turbocharger additional coolant pump. There was a potential fault caused by plastic additives in the coolant pump melting and causing short-circuit. In very rare cases may cause overheating and scorching on the coolant pump. If this happens, a fire in the engine compartment or entire vehicle cannot be rules out.
It required about two hours work to replace, and would be free of charge.
I had this done on my Mini Cooper 'S' by my local BMW/Mini Dealer.
As regards cooling of the pump this is automatic when the engine is switched off, you can actually hear the pump running.
