49,000mls Out of warranty but always MINI serviced.
Just thought I'd tell you about my recent problems. Got home from work to find a large pool of oil under the car and engine sounding very rough, no warning lights. Oil was leaking from the left hand ( as seen from the front) rear of the block and stopped when the engine stopped.
Research on the web suggested it was the timing chain tensioner bolt which was tightened and the oil leak was stopped. Engine still very rough. Re-filled with oil and drove to nearest mini garage.
They adjusted the timing, checked the tensioner and changed the seal. £1.70 for parts and £179 total bill, usual dealer markup!
I have no problem with the dealer , they have their costs to cover but I do have a problem with Mini UK. They have told me that this failed through normal wear and tear. I disagree , the head of the bolt is now in the same position as after I tightened it, the bolt was loose. I believe this is a design fault, who designs a component such that when it fails all the oil is pumped out!
So when you're powering down the motorway in the outside lane and life is good, keep an eye on the rear view mirror , see if you can see the trail of oil on the road behind.
